Almanac Poetry – The Rhymer: New Rules

New Rules

Stuffing around with the rules can be tricky
Just as a camel’s a horse drawn up by committee.

make sure the game’s for the on-ground eighteen
Not a monster invented by Frankenstein

some changes make sense and should help the game
but others might alter the reason crowds came

Six in the front half – six in defence –
four in the centre square, and two on the fence

that’s just how they lined up in years long ago
I trust that that change will help the game flow

The hands-in-the-back rule will now be scrapped.
I look forward to seeing how Riewoldt adapts

the kick-outs from goals can be well past the line
Big kickers like Hurn will find that change sublime

The changes should show what makes our game great
and hopefully get bigger crowds through the gate

free-flowing footy and uncanny skill.
Rewarding good players who can get the pill

The fifty metre rule will sure bring dissension
and the rule-making-guys might give that more attention

I know that the game is always evolving
but limit the changes to things that need solving.
