Almanac Other Sports – Great Sporting Weekend for Aussies and American Haters

Abraham Lincoln is my personal hero, but with the passing years I have a stronger dislike of American exceptionalism/triumphalism/commercialism.

What a sporting weekend for Australians.  Daniel Riccardo winning the Monaco F1 GP.  Will Power winning “America’s Race” the Indianapolis 500.

In my favourite sport of golf, Perth’s (I nearly said Fremantle’s) Minjee Lee won the Volvik Open on the LPGA tour. Australian Open winner Cameron Davis won the Nashville Open on the second level web.com tour.

We let the Brits in for a couple (anything is better than Septics) with Jason Rose winning the Colonial Open in Fort Worth, Texas on the PGA tour.  And Paul Broadhurst won a Major tournament for us over 50 champs at the US PGA Senior championship.

Nice guy Italian Francesco Molinari showed the virtue of hitting the ball in the fairways winning the British PGA at Wentworth near London, beating Irishman Rory McIlroy who hit the ball 40 metres past him off the tees (and into the trees).

And my Eagles won in Melbourne (again) over our Hawthorn tormentors to sit a game and percentage clear at the top of the ladder.

My Swan Districts beat Les Everett’s East Perth Eagles on Saturday afternoon.

I fell asleep last night after watching Daniel win in Monaco, and Francesco triumph at Wentworth.

What a beautiful set of numbers to wake up to.

Only goalkeeper Loris Karius stopped it being a perfect weekend (sorry Liverpudlians), but gave solace to us perpetual chokers (if only I’d holed that 3 foot putt on the last hole).

What’s not to like.  With friends like these the Donald could do with some R&R in Pyongyang.

  1. Bound to be another “Aussie” win coming up when Tomic plays Kyrgios too……

Well, there is our giant Texan, the Lanky Yank. Sadly our boy learnt what it is to be a Collingwood ruckman – had his arms chopped and pushed under the ball at all times. And the descendants of Deller, Crouch and Mclaren behaved like Bob Dylan’s Juarez wallopers –
“the cops don’t need you and man they expect the same.”

Fortunately this “whatever” attitude extended to the tribunal. Big Mason was done for all money for running into a bulldog little bloke – and escaped with a fine…

  3. Would a dog have done better in goal for Liverpool than Loris Karius?

That’s a quality weekend PB. Nothing better than beating the septic tanks in any sporting contest. Though possibly my favourite moment of the AFL season so far came on ANZAC Day when a big Mason Cox mark and goal saw the crowd chanting “USA, USA” in unison.
Continue to be impressed by your Eagles…..

  5. Bucko – Kyrgios withdraws late “injured”. Bernie beaten in 4 sets by an Argentinian who had to drive 10 hours back from Barcelona with his granny, after getting the late call up to the draw. Great story.
Good for tennis. Aussies may be on a roll, but winning at elite sport still requires a modest level of effort. Thankfully.

  6. Yes, indeed PB. Just when it seemed at least one of them would have a win, I have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory it would seem, as have Tomic the Tank Engine and NK at times. Those two must make the likes of Rosewall, Laver et al cry themselves to sleep. Still, they can both go home and count their money…

Winning the 500 was the one thing Power hadn’t done in his career. He’d won races, championships, even 500 mile races at other tracks, but never the biggest of them all….. until now.
