Don’t kill live music rally in Sydney

The petition below is designed to let the current NSW government know that their heavy handed response to recent music festival deaths and their inability to accept the evidence that pill testing is at least worth a try (looking at you too, Victoria) is going to potentially deal a fatal blow to the music scene in Sydney. Venues in Sin City have been struggling to cope with the fallout from the lockout laws. They are deeply concerned about this next hazard.

Many of us live in Melbourne and have the luxury of being able to go and see live music any night of the week without too many hassles. Sydney used to be like that too. I grew up there and used to see bands all the time in the 80s in scungy pubs in Surry Hills, Paddo, the Cross and Bondi. And Selina’s – saw so many great bands there!

I go back to Sydney regularly and it is heartbreaking to see the ghost town it becomes after dark. Our supposedly global city is a laughing stock and it affects all of us. Depriving budding musos the chance to play in Sydney has a knock on effect to all other cities in Australia.

So sign the petition or get on social media and make your voice heard. I’ve just had a Twitter exchange with Rhys Muldoon, who is hosting the event along with Yumi Stynes, and it seems I have had some impact already with him looking to evince the spirit of MC5. Time to kick out the jams, Almanackers!

About

Grew up playing the rugby codes in suburban Sydney. Moved to Melbourne during the Carey era so becoming a Shinboner was the natural call. Still love the game they play in heaven. Took an interest in MLB a few years back and have become infatuated with America's pastime.

  1. Colin Ritchie says

Keep music live, no matter where! I’ve signed the petition!

  2. Go for it Brian. Live music has been so much part of my (our) life it’s almost like a DNA.

Sadly the scene is not what it was in my youth but where you have live music, you’l have people enjoying themselves. Good luck with the struggle, get lots of signatures and re pill testing: FFS it’s 2019, let’s get with the project. As a health professional the evidence is there, but sadly opinions seem to hold more weight than evidence.

    Rock on.

    Glen!
