G’day again John.
I’m loving your book Play On.
Actually, I’m re-reading ‘The Beautiful Car’ chapter. The Camira!
I’m sharing some of your stories with my kids and mates.
John, it reminds me so much about some of my own cars including my present 2001 Ford Laser. Held together by Duct tape, wire etc.
Your road trip also reminds me of my trip around our beautiful Australia with two mates (Ronnie and Mick) in a 1968 HK Holden.
In 1972 there was still 250 miles of dirt road across the Nullarbor Plain. And, worse still about 700 miles of dirt road between Port Hedland and Broome. And, most of it corrugated. It shook the car and us almost to pieces.
Halfway up the track our tail pipe split. Now Mick is one of the best bush mechanics I’ve ever met. Luckily, these were the days of large steel beer cans. So, with some wire Mick rigged up a repair around the split with two steel cans and wire.
We continued on our way.
Long story short. Ronnie sold his beloved HK about a year or so after we returned to Melbourne. We couldn’t believe that the repair job of our Royal Mechanic Mick was still very much intact. UNBELIEVABLE!
Unfortunately, both my great mates, Ronnie and Mick are no longer with us, but I bet if anything up there (or down) needs fixing the Royal Mechanic Mick, ably supported by Prince Ronnie of Renmark providing a cold beer, will be well on the job.
So, we are in good hands for our next trip, if you know what I mean.
As always John, my love and warmest karma to you and all your family and friends and all our Footy Almanac Family.
Cheers mate.
Johno (Snowy)

John my first vehicle was a 1968 Holden HK Tri-matic. With bucket seats. Brown with a white roof. Best thing I’ve ever owned.
My uncle lives in Darwin. He bought his 1968 Holden HK brand new. He still drives it today! When he drives. The brakes couldn’t stop a pram.
