Footy is back but I’m not sure I have done the required preseason. I didn’t feel quite ready for last week’s games, mainly because I do not like the Opening Round concept for which I have two main reasons.
The first is that I don’t like the AFL’s knee-jerk decisions which brought about Opening Round last season. The bye before the finals was a knee-jerk decision and I also hate it. Simply because the NRL has gone to Vegas (Las rather than Bris) to start their season doesn’t mean the AFL has to jump in with games. Both codes can exist as friends and not sponsorship combatants.
The second reason is that, by only having four games played, unless there is a cyclone, the Opening Round dilutes the grandeur of all 18 clubs playing in the one round. It becomes a flaccid start rather than a true opening of the season.
There ends my gripes. Better go. There are some clouds I need to bark at.

Then there’s the absurdity of the opening round being followed by round one.
Couldn’t agree more.
Let’s get back to the “olden days”. Cricket 1st October to the end of March and then the footy can start.
