Almanac Cricket: The Langer Era Begins

At the risk of understating the obvious, these have been extraordinary times in Australian cricket.

In keeping with the modern cricket treadmill, the Justin Langer coaching reign begins in June, midweek, with a limited overs match in England.

There will, of course, be no Smith, no Warner, and no Bancroft. But there will also be no Starc, Cummins or Hazlewood.

And while the team resumes play, a cultural review is still proceeding back home. A review that won’t examine the position of the CEO (who is stepping down anyway), or the Chairman of the Board. Nor is the gentleman who conducted the review into the ball-tampering debacle still within the employ of Cricket Australia. And just to get us in the mood, David Warner will be commentating.

So, business as usual then. At least as usual as we once might have considered Pakistani cricket.

Much has been written here, and elsewhere, about what has transpired. But what do you folks think? As Tim Paine leads his men into battle with England, how do you feel?

We invite you to contribute your thoughts.

The cricket will be telecast on Gem from 9.30pm tonight.

  1. John Butler says

Australia and England have agreed to shake hands before tonight’s game.

This constitutes progress in modern cricket, apparently.

  2. Peter Warrington says

Maxwell out of form finally, which, you figure, suits some just fine

Meaningless songs, in very high voices…

  3. Yawn. When do the World Cup; Wimbledon; Tour de France and US and British golf Opens start? Real sport with real meaning. Not spakfilla put on for the bookies.

  4. John Butler says

Yes Slats, T20 internationals have been a bit of a problem.

So has losing pretty much every away Test series.

  5. John Butler says

PB, I’m a little curious what real meaning you get from the Tour de France?

Are you looking to invest in a pharmaceutical company?

  6. John Butler says

Marsh showing the value of actually moving your feet.

  7. Luke Reynolds says

Very important series for all of the Australian team, captain included, with the World Cup being held in England next year. Huge opportunity for every player in the squad.

Disappointed the D’arcy Short was not selected, think he offers more in ODI cricket than S.Marsh does these days.

  8. Might be my bad TV but the sound of bat on Aaron Finch’s bat suggests he’s using a fence paling.

  9. John Butler says

JTH, I was thinking the same thing. Might be the microphones.

Or he resurrected one of Dennis’ aluminium bats.

  10. Funny thing is, it’s a fence paling made from a sequoia.

  11. John Butler says

Marsh just played completely the wrong line there.

    Hypnotized by a straight one.

  12. Match summary:
Shaun Marsh should no longer be selected – Australian cricket must move on from him. I agree with Crackers – Darcy Short was an obvious selection.
Once again, when the Aussie collapse is on, it is well and truly on.
If Tim Paine is not opening, then the batting order with him at 5 looks very skinny.
Once again, Australia’s frailties against spin are exposed. And yet again, another international team proves how important spin is in short-form cricket.
Yet again, Australia pay lip-service to spin bowling, with Agar bowling only 5 largely disappointing overs, and Maxi 2. Short’s left-arm wrist-spinners may have proven at least handy.
