Almanac Books: The Furphy Anthology 2020

The Furphy Anthology 2020 showcases sixteen short stories selected from last year’s Furphy Literary Award. The Award, established in 1992 in the Greater Shepparton area, is now overseen by cousins Adam and Sam Furphy – fifth generation custodians of the Furphy family businesses and now the Furphy Foundation. The Award became a national competition for the first time in 2020 with entrants asked to respond to the apt topic of ‘Australian Life’. Sam and Adam were absolutely delighted by the response of writers: they received over 850 entries.

The Furphy cousins congratulate writer and poet Ruby Todd, whose story Awakening was judged the winner.. Ya Reeve’s story Pub Raffle – an evocative account of a coastal town surrounded by bushfires, which was derived from her own experience – and popular writer Cate Kennedy’s amusing piece, Ando Gets Plastered were awarded second and third prize respectively. These pieces, alongside thirteen other stories which were highly commended, are included in the anthology.

The Furphy Anthology 2020 was launched in March 2021. Sit back, relax and be inspired, entertained and amused by the imaginative and thought-provoking stories contained within.
