Almanac Art: Nick Howson

Nick Howson lives and works in Richmond, Melbourne. His paintings are held in prominent Australian collections. Nick’s work is best known for its sporting and historical themes.

Roy Boy: Edinburgh Gardens oil on linen 36x50cm

His public works feature at Richmond Station: the iconic mural ‘Tiger Legend’, a tribute to footy great Jack Dyer.

Peter Bedford mixed media wood sculpture 50x20x10cm

 ‘Jezza’

The game of football and its history has always captured Nick’s imagination. He came across old football cards and this began a quest to go deeper into the folklore of each club. Finding the stories fascinating, he began a suite of drawings to bring the legends to life. The cards were designed to pay homage to one of the most important ways that footy fans communicate with each other, swapping and collecting cards.

The printed set of cards are based on the historical 12 VFL clubs in their original colours, stripes and names. A deck of 12 cards will set you back $30.00 or $50.00 with a box frame.

Set Shot: Arden Street, oil on linen  46 x 33 cm
