Almanac Art: A prelude to the 2020 AFL Grand Final from DJ Williams

Almanackers, many of you will already be aware of the incredible works of Darren ‘DJ’ Williams. Spanning well over a century, his subjects range from early footballers kitted out in knickerbockers and caps to modern day AFLW stars in full flight. His image of Luke Shuey evading a Steele Sidebottom lunging tackle adorned the cover of our Eagles Almanac in 2018.

In the lead up to a highly anticipated Grand Final between two great and storied sides (who will face off in the decider for the first time in over half a century) he has two pieces listed on his online portal featuring the 1889 Richmond ‘Wasps’ and 1896 Geelong ‘Pivotonians’ – both of whom come together via the magic of editing to form the image below (not for sale or indeed existing in any physical sense, just in case anyone was wondering…)

Plenty of history exists between these sides, not limited to recent finals series or even the 1967 Grand Final, so we think these images are a beaut reminder of the late VFA/early VFL sides who came before the ‘Tigers’ and ‘Cats’ we know today.

    That’s great Jarrod, thanks.

  2. No worries at all Darren, the two teams have such an iconic look; more than happy to help spread the word about your art.
