All Girls Twenty20 a huge hit in Jamestown helping kids with cancer

Saturday saw women’s cricket take centre stage as Jamestown’s Victoria Park played host to the All Girls Twenty20 as a fundraiser for the Kids With Cancer Foundation Australia. Twenty eight women from across the region put the women’s game on display, together with the Big Bash style razzamataz featuring live commentary from ABC radio’s Brenton Hobart, coloured uniforms, orange cricket balls and live music throughout the afternoon. The crowd of over three hundred helped raise over $3,500, whilst enjoying a terrific family event.

Prue Redden, captain of Bundaleer Forrest Foxes won the won the toss and after some consultation with Coach Scott Clark, opted to bat first. Flinders Felines Captain Sophie Home then took the new ball, after having it presented by her one year old Son Archer and his Pop Don. Runs started to flow early with Redden and Danielle Boulton getting them off to a solid start. The Feline’s bowling attack started to get on top of the middle order, with Louise Woolford and Mary-Anne Young forming a strong spin attack. But the damage was done by the quicks, with Mitch Catford responding to some sledging from the crowd to finish with four wickets, whilst Nicole Luckraft showed a bit of pace including the famous sandshoe crusher. Some strong partnerships from sisters Meg and Lucy Karvonen and Alice Clark and Alice Moore helped the Foxes set a sound total of 171.

In reply, the Felines were off to a great start with Kerren Abbot and Pam Sparks finding the boundary regularly, before the Foxes fought back with some solid bowling from Eileen Martin and Georgie Treloar. Bec Hale, Rachel Denton and Alysha Sparks kept the board ticking, but when the game looked all but over enter Justine Reynolds. Displaying a bowling action that made her Uncle Peter Ogilvy a well known bowler for Mannanarie, she took four wickets, including a caught and bowled to put the game in the balance. But it wasn’t to be as the Felines lower order saw them home, finishing at 202 after their allotted overs. For their part, Pam Sparks and Justine Reynolds were named as players of the match for each team.

To cap off the evening the crowd were treated to a performance from local band “The Reminders” who kindly donated their services for the evening. Backyard Football League Australia Committee Member Nigel Bottrall said “it was a fantastic day and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. Prue Redden, Sophie Home and Alysha Sparks have put countless hours in to organising the day, it’s a credit to them. To raise such a significant amount in a single day, does show how giving the community can be.” Bottrall also spoke that the girls were very keen to have another match next year, with talks already underway.

Organiser Prue Redden offered huge thanks to sponsors Hamilton Run Poll Merino and Dohne Stud, Railway Hotel Jamestown, Jamestown Meat Service, Sparks Design and Kelly Toyota as well as the Jamestown Peterborough Football and Netball Club, Belalie Mannanarie Cricket Club, Bundaleer Cricket Club, Jamestown Junior Cricket Club, local band “The Reminders”and the many volunteers who helped make the day such a success.
