AFLW 2018 Spoon Gongs: And the award goes to…

AFLW 2018 Season Spoon Gongs

The wooden spoon goes to the Carlton girls who have now officially finished on the bottom of the ladder.

A five-game losing streak decimated their 200% when on top of the ladder after two rounds this season. How the hierarchy at Princess Park react to this situation allows flies-on-the-wall entrepreneurs to book seats out for. Some players will be traded or want to be traded. Others will be delisted. No news of retirements yet. Will the coaching staff remain the same? A proud club like Carlton does not sit on its hands.

The lighting gods at Ikon Stadium get their fair serve as we sat through the home games shielding our eyes after half time. Great ground for an afternoon game, spoonish at night.

The Oxford Hotel in Drummoyne gets their spoon for not having more local brews on tap or in the fridge. A second spoon for the oval ground staff who removed our banner promoting the AFLW.

The lockout at the Whitten oval of Susan Alberti was rivalled only by the “lock in” of patrons at the only drinks tent in front of the Whitten Stand. Those in need of refreshments joined the 100m queue at any part of the game. I used the full half time break to do this to award them their spoon.

The Hornet jets in Adelaide were sensational for their ten minutes of fame. They were just one of the Adelaide 500 attractions of the weekend. Unfortunately, if you resided too close to the street racetrack you needed 8hr a day ear plugs from Friday to Sunday. Noise spoon nomination. A second nomination for the parking inspector in Norwood who allowed me to park in the neighbourhood for $65.

It’s hard to find worthy spoon nominations for Perth as this is one beautiful city. First teaspoon would go to the blaring ground speakers – way too loud fellas. Another unique Perth experience one may be forced to undergo is the ‘surging’ on the Mitchell freeway. Flabbergasting is one word to describe using first gear and fifth gear at various times in the right lane! Odd spoon.

So, the opposite of the spoon has to be the flag. That being the case, some of these flag moments come as highlights of our second AFLW season:

  • Tramming it down Royal Parade to White Night in Melbourne to cheer us up after the home Brisbane game.
  • The compulsory picture of the Sydney Harbour bridge with the Opera House in the background!
  • Swimming in the Indian Ocean. Morning walks along it. Sunsets over it.
  • Adelaide = wineries! Take your pick as we did around McLaren Vale and the Barossa.
  • Margaret River was a worthy rival, don’t miss the Aravina or Vasse Felix wineries.
  • Beautiful King’s Park overlooking Perth. Lunch and relax.
  • Downtown Footscray for lunch of any Asian kind – delish!
  • The thunder, lightning and downpour at Drummoyne. Plus, their 20min. fireworks
  • Comparing Haigh’s of SA to the Margaret River Chocolate factory of WA.
  • Sitting out on The Parade outside the Colonist Hotel sipping ales into a lovely warm Adelaide evening.

I am sure season 2019 will be a better one for the Blues and probably just as harsh on the wallet. Please acknowledge and let my wife know I said nothing of the umpiring this season …

Terrific stuff Dave. Love the photos especially of the fans and the Town Hall. The Doggies were down low last year. Who knows what 2019 will bring. Can’t wait.

  2. G’day Dave,

It’s sad that your Blue girls won the spoon two years in a row.

And your views of taking positively from other clubs are so interesting. Well written.

At the Osaka Dingoes Footy Club, I have been told to keep positive; otherwise I wouldn’t improve footy skills. Keep positive with Carlton, mate.

I hope your club doesn’t rush sacking a coach and finding an instant solution. No more sacking Brett Ratten and hiring Mick Malthouse.

    Cheers

    Yoshi

  3. Thanks for the advice!
Giants won the spoon in ’17 …
    Carlton finished 4th

  4. Sorry Dave. I was unaware of the last season’s ladder on AFLW. Should have researched before making a comment.
