AFL Round 14 – West Coast v Essendon: Let the Eagles fly at Yarraville

Many years ago a good mate and I started “Let the eagles fly at Yarraville action faction”, on the Coodabeen Champions, 3RRR/ABC radio.  We started about the same time the VFL, in their wisdom, decided the competition needed to go national and set up this team in Western Australia. In those days Yarraville Football Club was playing in the VFA and doing it tough but we both reckoned if there was to be an eagle team it should be in the VFA!

Now as a long-time Don Tragic I have never found much to like about this created club, but after the disgraceful behaviour of their supporters  last Thursday night when they booed Jobe Watson non-stop throughout the match, I’m afraid I have even less to like about them. Do they all have short-term memory problems? You would think that the difficulties that club has had with drugs over the years that they would be sympathetic to anyone who may have been caught up in this situation. And then for the coach to say he didn’t hear anything beggars belief.

The great thing about Thursday night was that The Dons came from behind in truly gallant fashion to win by seven points. Mid way through the last quarter, I didn’t like our chances but kept thinking about the great comeback against Fremantle earlier this year. And like in that earlier game we came up with the goods. Nail biting, heart attack stuff. What a great team, what guts and determination they showed, and no one showed it finer than Jobe Watson, a best on ground performance. And he wasn’t alone: Jake Carlisle, Courtney Dempsey, David Zaharakis, Jason Winderlich, Paddy Ryder and the other sixteen were all superb in my book.

Well done you mighty Dons and I still reckon Doug and I were right about the eagles all those years ago.

The Dons by seven points  Essendon 15.8. 98 defeated WCE 13.13. 91.
