AFL finals ticketing debacle same old story for fans

Ticketek’s system issue that caused many club members to think their AFL finals game was sold out when it wasn’t is not good enough, the AFL Fans Association says.

 

Club member tickets went on sale this morning at 9am AEST via Ticketek for Richmond-Hawthorn, Melbourne-Geelong and Sydney-GWS, and 9am Perth time (11am AEST) on Ticketmaster for West Coast-Collingwood. Public sales were due to start at 2pm local time.

 

Many members struggled to access the Ticketek site, with some reporting that only single tickets were left by around 9.25am. When they finally got through, some fans were told there were no tickets left.

 

At around 11am, Richmond, Hawthorn and Melbourne tweeted that Ticketek sales were suspended due to a system issue, but there were tickets left. This left many fans distraught and unsure what to do.

 

The AFL tweeted at 11.21am that due to the Ticketek issue, 2pm public sales would be delayed. SEN reported that when sales were re-opened, they would be staggered for the different games.

 

AFL Fans Association president Gerry Eeman says fans are furious that problems with finals ticketing seem to arise every year, often resulting in some diehards missing out on tickets.

 

“Unfortunately, this is an annual problem that is almost becoming part of the finals experience. The frustration of fans is palpable. If the Ticketek system can’t handle the traffic, consideration must be given to staggering when tickets go on sale for each game.” Gerry says.

 

In Week 1 of the 2018 finals, Richmond will host Hawthorn at the MCG, West Coast hosts Collingwood in Perth, Melbourne hosts Geelong at the MCG, and Sydney hosts GWS at the SCG.
