A Tottenham Supporter’s Lament

Just before the start of the season, the much-anticipated poaching of Garth Bale by Real Madrid was finalised.  My team Tottenham lost last season’s EPL Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year but gained a world record transfer fee of 86 million euros.  We spent this money on a handful of international talent and hopes were high that we could finally finish top three and qualify automatically for the Champions League or top four and make the play-off stage again.  Some pundits picked us to win the Championship. This is how the season turned out.

We finished sixth, got smashed multiple times by the top four teams and were very lucky to sneak into the Europa League via the back door due to Man City winning the League Cup, and therefore that spot going to the next highest finisher after automatically qualified fifth-placed Everton.  We also placed a less attractive game style for much of the season, scoring as few goals as we have in any of the past 5 seasons.

Great to hear from another Spur’s tragic. I shared your pain this season as Tottenham promised so much (or we expected so much) but did not quite deliver. Just like my beloved Dockers this season.
