A Perfume Bottle from 1882

The Ashes as seen at ‘Velvet, Iron, Ashes’ exhibition at the State Library of Victoria.

It carries the weight of both the Australian and English Cricket worlds.

The essence of the sport

The rivalry,

the passion,

the history.

Our country,

their country.

Spawns from The Ashes Urn.

It may be small, but tradition it protects.

Tradition it upholds.

Tradition it has become.

New world took on old

The Australians,

the English,

the bat and the ball.

The Urn as the emblem for this mighty sport.

“In Affectionate Remembrance of English Cricket”

The Urn a symbol of an age-old rivalry.

The Urn a symbol of our history.

The Urn a symbol of the interconnection –

A father,

A daughter,

A life shared through this sport.

Just passers-by in this big world,

Halted in time to admire this history.

All contained in a perfume bottle from 1882.

  1. Delightful Anna.

It raises the issue of other trophies in world sport. What’s your favourite? Most ugly? Most ridiculous.

  2. Luke Reynolds says

THE most important trophy in sport. Fantastic words Anna.

  3. Mark Duffett says

The World Cup trophy would have be up there for most incongruous, if not ridiculous. It’s not even a cup!

  4. Daryl Schramm says

Magic. Greater meaning personally after attending Lords and Leeds last year.

  5. Colin Ritchie says

Fab Anna! I think you should forward a copy (if you haven’t already done so) to the MCC & Lords. Well done!

  9. I love that you were moved to this tribute, Anna.
And I love the whole premise of the urn, the Death Notice in the paper, the ceremony of burning the bails, the death of English cricket.

    What a laugh.

A mighty example of the value of story.

  10. Great poem
