Comments

  1. Thought Riewoldt would have won it for sure. Interesting to see that Dane Swan didnt finish in the top 10 and Brent Harvey racked up the most votes for North even though he missed a large chunk of the season

  2. Congratulations C Judd on winning the Malarkey. This is undoubtedly the most prestigious award not in the media. I thought Ablett would win it hands down but he might suffer a bit from the same desease his father did – ABS (Acquired Brilliance Syndrome) whereby anything less than brilliant is ignored.

  3. Peter Flynn says

Calculating Pearson’s correlation coefficient for the top ten (down to Goddard), I get an r-value of 0.78.

This represents a strongish positive correlation (association) between the two variables (Brownlow votes and Malarkey votes).

  4. Does that mean Knackers think a lot like umpires…?

  5. Peter can you compare to the tv votes please? I would love to see if there is a stronger relationship, than that against the Brownlow? My hypothesis is that there is a positive relationship between votes awarded by tv analysts and malarkey voters.

  6. Richard Jones says

TIM — u have to take into account the fact that the core population of the Knackery has no formal journalistic qualification or experience, either print or electronic.
So I would opine that the Malarkey Medal is a nice little experiment for non or wannabe journos. I would say there would be a certain buzz in lodging votes each time an article is filed, but in the end no one really cares.
There is nothing riding on the process — the lodging of the votes or the season ending outcome.

  7. Couldn’t agree more Richard, I am one of those people with no qualifications nor print experience. I’m asking purely out of academic curiosity (damn my university brainwashing)

  8. Peter Flynn says

    Tim,

On a ‘feel’ basis, I’d agree with you although I suspect such statistical exercises would give reasonably similar (slightly higher) correlation coefficients caused by unexpected bumps.
Have you got any tv/print media votes for me to analyse?
I reckon we’re more likely to reward forwards and to slightly lesser extent backman.

    Gigs,
We think a reasonable amount like umpires.

    A brief look at differentials:
The biggest positive differentials (m-b) seem to occur for forwards e.g. Stevie J (9), Buddy (8), Jurrah (7) and Saint Nick (8). There could be others.
We marked Boyd (-9), Hayes (-8), Sewell (-9) and O’Keefe (-7) down quite significantly compared to the umpires.

Anyway, it’s time to concentrate on The Cup.

  9. The hypothesis in past year’s has beena correlation to ABC Radio votes and a suspicion that this is a source of affirmation for Knackers. Hope not as I’d rather our input than Stan Alves’!

  10. Gigs you’re the numbers man. Any analysis of how many votes Fudd gouged from Carlton supporting ‘Knackers’.

There needs to be an enquiry here. Who were the mob that looked into the recent Afganistan elections? We need them here post haste.

This could be the biggest controversy of the modern era of AFL.

  11. Phantom – agree completely. And in the event that an audit reveals an dead heat (once adjustments are made for the usual Carlton corruption) the tie breaker should simply be, in the spirit of the great man Gary Malarkey, who has the biggest thigh muscles.

    Young Gazza wins by plenty.

  12. I think you’ll find the Judd voting more hagiographic than corrupt…
