VFL: Willy nearly did a Bully

Got very excited to see my seconds team were on the telly this afternoon. No I don’t mean Richmond or Fremantle (after a recent trip to WA and looking at their ground in Freo and noticing it was the home of The Bulldogs [South Fremantle]) . Yes I was desperate to see a link to the Western Bulldogs and glad to see Willy in a finals match and also hoping to see Bulldog listed players going flat out to avoid a Ratt-sack.

But very disappointed to see very few Bulldogs line up. It might have something to do with Williamstown going it alone next year but it also indicated the amount of players unavailable due to injury.

The match had lots of lows particularly the slow start by Willy and Willy having to fight off a challenge by Bendigo in the last quarter. Come to think of it, it was very ‘Bulldog’ like with their slow start and lacking reliable forward targets.

I looked in vain for some likely recruits. The only possible was Tom Smith the tall forward. I’m not sure where he’s been all year but I hope the Dogs take a look at him…again. Brodie Moles was good but as the commentators said, he’s good at VFL level but struggles at the higher level.

Anyway Willy lives to fight another day as we the supporters of the vanquished in the AFL cling to something before the long wait between October and March begins. Do Almanackers go on holiday at that time?

About Neil Anderson

Enjoys reading and writing about the Western Bulldogs. Instead of wondering if the second premiership will ever happen, he can now bask in the glory of the 2016 win.

  1. Skip of Skipton says

Who are Footscray’s reserves playing for next year?

Don’t know who the Bulldog ressies will be alligned with. It would be nice if they could be a stand-alone team like Geelong and Collingwood but after this year’s run of injuries, they would be lucky to field a team each week.
Which reminds me of the good old days when you got to see the seconds playing before the main match on your own dunghill. Even the top teams who found their way accross the Maribynong were likely to come a cropper at the Western Oval.
By the way Skip, are you from Skipton in the Western District ,because if you are, we are practically neighbours?

  3. Skip,
Footscray will be running their own reserves next year. Just like Geelong & Collingwood. Others are sure to follow. Will be interesting to see how Willy fare as a stand-alone outfit.
