Williamstown CYMS AFC was not able to repeat the efforts of last September when it went down to old foes Peninsula Old Boys by 23 points in a keenly contested match at Williamstown’s Fearon Reserve.

The CYs, fielding a relatively young and inexperienced side (with 14 new faces compared to the side that last faced off against the ‘Pirates’ in last year’s grand final) were well and truly in the game all day and at the ¾ time break only trailed by 21 points with last use of the wind. Unfortunately the home side ran out of steam after closing to within 9 points midway through the last term and the stronger bodied Peninsula was able to go on to record a well deserved victory and thereby extract a measure of revenge for last year’s loss.

Williamstown had a number of fine contributors and Ben Gray was the pick of them with a best on ground performance out of the midfield. Marking everything that came his way and contesting well at ground level, he capped off his game with a huge 60m goal during the third term. Cody McCracken, despite giving away a significant height advantage, contested every issue in the ruck and was an inspiration to his younger team mates. Cal Richards and skipper Andrew McKay worked hard all day from the centre and defence respectively. In a forward line that only fired intermittently and which suffered from poor delivery, teenager Hayden Armstrong started to find his feet in senior company and finished the day with 4 goals. He gave valuable support to Josh Vanderloo who also finished with four goals. Together with James Wong they form a potent forward line but Williamstown will need to sort out their set-up and delivery if they are to reap full advantage.

Next week Williamstown will play the local derby, when they renew acquaintances with perennial rival Werribee. It will be a huge challenge for the CYs as the flag favourites are undefeated and sit on top of the Division 1 ladder, having won all games by ten goals or more so far this season.

Williamstown’s reserve grade side continued on its winning way over the weekend and, despite going to sleep during the third quarter, ran out very comfortable 84 point victory against its 2009 Grand Final rival.

The CYs were best served by Shannon McAlpine. Pinch hitting in the ruck his natural athleticism enabled him to win many contests in the ruck and around the ground. Young ‘Jimmy’ Toscos showed plenty of pace and football smarts to be a fine contributor off his wing and Lawrence Henry made a good first up return with a solid game a cross half back. Matthew Tennant continued his consistently good form this season with another sure and efficient game up forward. Experienced Tim Bowers was solid in defence and ‘Will-‘o-the-Wisp’ small forward Abdul Yacin showed a clean pair of heels to the opposition all day to finish with four goals himself whilst having a hand in quite a few others.

Williamstown CYMS Third Eighteen also remained undefeated with a solid 31 point win away to Old Paradians. The CYs held a 5 goal lead at the main break and withstood a spirited third term comeback from Parade before going on to parcel up the match with a five goals to 2 final quarter.

Evergreen Darren ’Daisy’ Williams was the CYs best with a typically determined display over four quarters. Newcomer Dean Russ impressed with his balance and composure around the packs. Others to show out in a pretty even performance were veterans Michael ‘Meatballs’ Manning, Dan ‘It’s in the Can’ Oldham and Kirk ‘Sauce’ Dowsey. Simon Fraser again revealed his undoubted football talent with a good first up performance and will improve further as he gets some more footy under his belt.
