WAFL Round Three…
I DIDN’T go to a game this weekend… work in Jurien Bay (dinkum). Turns out being away from home was all the rage… it was clean sweep for the visiting teams.
However I did catch the impressive win by Claremont over Perth at Lathlain on 7 Mate. The Tigers were better organised than the Demons who have pace and talent but don’t do the kind of running required in the modern game. Alex Manuel played the game of his short career finishing with five goals and setting up others, Jack Richardson kicked five goals and Beau Maister scored 4.6. Young midfielder Bailey Banfield was outstanding, Jessie Laurie was part of a good defence and Ian Richardson was an effective forward. Brennan Stack kicked five goals for Perth, Spencer White got four, Laine Wilkins used the ball well and Christian Eyres battled hard in the ruck. Liam McKenna marginally had the best of an entertaining battle with Jye Bolton.
Claremont 22.15 (141) Perth 13.10 (88)
Swan Districts scored four goals to one in the last quarter to beat East Perth at Leederville and remain undefeated. Taryce Stewart kicked four goals for Swans, Jamie Bennell returned to the team in style, while Jack Watson, Adam Faulkner and Braydon Noble were good players. Nathan Blee scored four goals for the Royals, Francis Watson maintained his good form and Steven Payne was at his best.
Swan Districts 11.7 (73) East Perth 9.9 (63)
South Fremantle bounced back with an emphatic victory over Peel at Ruston Park. Ashton Hams (left) controlled things for the Bulldogs, Cory Dell-Olio kicked four goals, Mason Shaw got three, youngster Brandon Donaldson impressed and Shaun Bewick’s hard running was important for the Bulldogs. Harley Balic had another good game for the Thunder, Sam Collins was solid in defence and Sean Darcy worked well in the ruck.
South Fremantle 12.14 (86) Peel 5.13 (43)
Winning at Joondalup is never easy for the visitors, so Subiaco’s 16-point victory over West Perth was further proof they will be part of things again in 2017. Ben Sokol kicked five goals for the Lions, Aaron Heal was enterprising in defence, Leigh Kitchen and Kyal Horsley provided drive in the midfield and Max Walters had another good game. Tyler Keitel kicked four goals for the Falcons, Trent Manzone and Shane Nelson were solid midfielders and Corey Chalmers had a good game.
Subiaco 13.7 (85) West Perth 10.9 (69)
The ladder: Swan Districts 12; Claremont 8; Peel 8; South Fremantle 8; Subiaco 8; West Perth 4; East Perth 0; Perth 0; East Fremantle 0.
Next week: Friday: East Perth vs Claremont (Leederville); Saturday: Subiaco vs Peel (Leederville), Perth vs East Fremantle (Lathlain Park), South Fremantle vs West Perth.
