WA beats Vic Country in Under 18 championships

THE WA under 18s team atoned for their defeat by Queensland with a strong victory over Victoria Country at Subiaco Oval on Sunday.

In a game highlighted by excellent kicking from both teams WA controlled the first and last quarter while Vic Country were in charge for the middle bit.

The visitors took a three-point lead to the last break after trailing by 20 at quarter time and looked likely to win when they kicked the first goal of the last quarter.

However WA kicked the last four goals of the game to pull off an 18-point win. The stands were full of old style recruiting types with clip boards and modern types with iPads and there was plenty to write home about.

Jack Martin showed skill, flair and hard work with a best-on-ground display for WA, Mason Shaw kicked two of his four goals in the last quarter and is the type of big kid that turns heads, fellow tall forward Marco Paparone kicked two goals but also impressed with his defensive work that included a game changing tackle in the last quarter. Others to catch my eye were Josh Simpson, Marvin Warrell, Chris Deluca and Jesse Hogan.

Vic Country also moved the ball well. Highly rated Lachie Whitfield kicked three goals in an impressive performance and i also liked the look of Billy Hartung, Nicholas Graham and Taylor Garner, who kicked three goals.
