Tiger Terrific

Richmond V St Kilda, Round 10, 3/6/12

It was described as the ‘match of the year’ to this date which perhaps served as an alternative exhilaration for Richmond fans. Their time has finally come, and this time, it is here to stay.

Richmond’s’ decade long jinx against St Kilda has finally been dispelled, leaving Richmond fans and perhaps the rest of the competition to now consider the Tigers the ‘real deal.’

The Tigers started the game well, in what was an arm-wrestle of an opening quarter, with Richmond failing to make the most of their dominance, booting 3.7 for the quarter. Jack Riewoldt had started the game well, kicking three for the quarter against an under-manned St Kilda defence.

The Cotchin/Maric duo that had plagued several sides this season did so again against the Saints in a prodigious manner, with the Saints still in the game by half-time thanks to an inefficient Richmond side. The game had reached great heights thus far, with Tigers spearhead Jack Riewoldt out-performing his cousin Nick, with five goals to half-time.

Richmond began the second half well with goals to Maric and Nahas, but the Saints responded well and dominated the remainder of the term, with only their inaccurate 1.8 leaving them short of the Tigers at three-quarter time. Ironically, the inaccuracy that had plagued the Tigers in the first term had manifested into Saintly form, whilst Jack Riewoldt failed to hit the scoreboard due to a superb ‘blanketing’ by Jason Blake.

Richmond dominated the first ten minutes of the final term, racing out to a twenty point lead, only for the Saints, via an inspired Jason Gram, to storm back and hit the lead with only 10 minutes to go. Alarm bells were ringing for Richmond, and someone needed to stand up. Enter Trent Cotchin, who whilst being tackled by three St Kilda players on the wing, manages to wriggle his way through and haul a 15 metre hand pass to another Tiger, who then popped it over to Jack Riewoldt who stormed home to seal the game in what was his third goal for the term, and eighth for the match.
