The Footygods: Hermes

The Greeks found Hermes difficult to define. Some called him the god for travellers. Some said that he was the god for those who wandered past their own boundaries. But perhaps they re the different ways of saying the same thing. And he was the god for athletics and luck and a whole lot of other things as well. And then at the end of it all, he’d carry your soul to Hades: past the biggest boundary of them all.

My son met Mike Pyke the other night. Mike had gone from Canada to play the English game of rugby in Scotland and then France. And then come all the way to Australia to play an Australian game.

That’s a long way to travel. Travel changes you. Your home is never quite the same after you’ve been away. And neither are you. And Mike wasn’t the first or the last to leave their home. The boys from Ireland and the Pacific are all on their own journey. And so in our own ways are all of us. Those boys will need a bit of athleticism and a bit of luck. And hopefully they’ll be better for it, and so will we.

So HERMES seems like the multi-tasking pinch hitter God? I can relate to his chores too well. He should be called upon often during these times.
