the damp Sherrin

grand final dawn
a bit of tightness
in my hammys

low cloud
Cloke’s long drop punt
splits the ‘G in half

even on this day
Stevie J reminds us the ‘G
is a playing field

half-time
at the pub another round
of texting

lights on
Leon goes back into
his shell

rain drops
Ottens brushes off one or two
defenders

floodlit ‘G
Reid’s shadows fall
all over the place

clouds swallow the sun
the damp Sherrin nestles
in Hawkins’ chest

fine mist
what’s left of
our threadbare defence

dark clouds
the night spreads
goal by goal

final siren
c. ling
let’s go

  1. HB – no doubt a tough day at the office. Love the Stevie J reference.

  2. HB – excellent work…….you’ve captured key moments and players perfectly without all of the other rubbish often thrown up.

Love the last paragraph – the Mayor of Gellong is a humble beauty and you can only admire blokes like him. If he retires today he’ll go out on top as he should.

Also love how you captured Reid’s late torment & anguish. He’s a ripper and was simply unable to perform at his normal level. It’s a brutal game and you are exposed like this. I am sure this will drive him on.

The Cats were too good for us but we fought it out whilst there was gas left in the tank. When it ran out however, the end came swiftly.

On to 2012 and more of your offerings.

  3. Solid year HB.

I liked your line about Krakouer the best. Can’t remember quite what it was. Something about shadows and light.

    All the best.
    Ed

    Commiserations HB

We’ll see if Bucks knows a path to the promised land next year.

  5. Peter Flynn says

    G’day HB,

    Commiserations mate.

Great last reference to C Ling. It appears we won’t see his turning circle again.
