VFLW Round 1 – Southern Saints v Carlton: The Blues get to sing

Southern Saints v Carlton

11:15AM, Saturday May 5

Frankston Park

A win with a bang.

What a beautiful setting the Frankston Oval is…unless you have to spend the afternoon at the Frankston Hospital instead!

Our four-hour trip down from the Murray River to the home of the Dolphins was thwarted when Gab Pound was an early exit due to an overzealous training/warm up mishap. It was good to see that concussion issues are treated very seriously … that said, we spent much of the second half of this game in the casualty ward.

Back on the ground, the Blues VFLW team was chock-full of confidence, Sarah Hosking leading them out onto the field. It was sheer power as Breann Moody dominated the ruck and field position around the ground. Darcy Vescio had the ball on a string as she marked strongly and weaved her magic to kick 3 first quarter goals. Maddie Gay, Tilly Lucas-Rodd, Maddie Kerryk and Sophie Li were assertive with their superior skills. All ably supported by Nat Plane, Bridie Kennedy and former Docker, Akec Makur Chuot.

Well you would expect players of this calibre to shine, yet it was with interest we watched the rest of the team play. I believe we will see and hear a lot of Kristi Harvey and Brooke Walker. Celine Moody took some strong marks and is the next sister double. Caroline Hardeman and Courteney Bromage showed that they ‘have it.’

What struck me though was the presence of the AFLW Carlton players both on and off the field. Ten of these ladies took the field while eight either watched from the stands or sported high-vis vests and ran water and the like. There were more listed but not in attendance! I am not sure exactly whether there are 18 AFLW Carlton players registered on their VFLW playing list, yet it is plain to see that there is a clear bond within this team and club. There seems to be few, if any, who have chosen to return to their former VFL affiliates – Darebin, Mugars, etc. While the performances of the last two seasons have been far from successful, there is no doubting the spirit that is currently melding this team together.

The only other VFLW team that boasts such a large number of AFLW players is the Territory Thunder, further underlying the commitment being shown by this truly Victorian team.

Hooked up and all vitals showing normal, Gab Pound nursed her headache in a comfortable ward. The Blues meanwhile went on to record a 9.5 (59) to 5.7 (37) win against the Southern Saints, allowing the team for the first time since the Drummoyne win, to belt out, “Da dada dah daaaah!”
