Spring Carnival Punting Competition (lucrative)

First Prize:

a copy of Gerard Whateley’s Black Caviar.

Second Prize:

a copy of an Almanac of your choice

Here’s the go.

This will all be done in the comments section of this post.

The competition will last for the four days of the Spring Carnival.

Before the advertised starting time of the first race on each day of the carnival, you will need to list ONE RUNNER in each race as a single comment. And whether your bet is win-only (2 units) or each way (1 unit e-w).

Punters will be coupled and one will mark the other’s card (ie they will tally the day’s dividends for their mate) a la golf.

We will create a LEADERBOARD.

We will use the TATTSBET dividends. The link is on our homepage.

As a nice adjunct I’d like to see a book established on the likely winner of this event. D. Downer may well be favourite. Your thoughts are welcome here. What price Oges? Skip? Budge and Crio? P J Flynn? Freeza – a dark horse? Elvis, what about Elvis?

Comments

  1. Peter Flynn says:

I’ll be too refreshed to mark anybody’s card.

I reckon just appoint a scorer for each day.

    PJF

  2. Stick with DDs tips and you will win. He doesnt bet like me on emotion, jockeys trainers or hunches- just diligent research. But I have to say for sheer staying power Crio wins hands down (by Sat week he will have been holding the bag and still smiling after 7 meetings in 10 days- my counting correct Crio?)
Budge for the e/w in the competition (he mixes in the right circles for tips)

  3. David Downer says:

Piled the pressure on me now, Oges! I did leave you with Ocean Park as we parted ways in the betting ring last week didn’t I??

  4. Sure did and thanks DD and with Budges e/w i got out of jail. What a great day all round

  7. David Downer says:

Ok folks, I’m on leave this week so am willing to be the central administrator on this and set up a spreadsheet to automate all the calcs and dividends. Should reduce the collective pain of everyone looking up the dividends, and reduces the error rate of course.

But can I please ask that you post the tips in a format as the boys above have done. If not, I propose the tips be null and voided! So please include…

RaceNum – Tab No – Horse Name – Outlay

You ok with all that JTH?

    Gotcha C.Down,

No extra points for the registered TH race-names, but appreciated nonetheless.

Sam Morwood, thanks for getting involved with the tips, but saddlecloth numbers next time please. Makes it much, much easier at this end. Don’t make me null and void your selections next time, folks!

Oh shit, what do we do about scratchings …the administrator would like to propose that “you just have to wear it” #scrubthesub #painintheass

  16. Sadly, I get hours to pore over nondescript July fields and have just noticed that I don’t even have a formguide for Derby Day! Might be as good policy.

    Good punting folks.

  25. David Downer says:

Leaderboard after Derby Day. Day of punting horrors indeed!

Note, I am tallying up the collects here – not profit/loss! I think all the negative figures would mentally kill some (lucrative) dreams before we even hit Cup day. You will get money back for scratchings – so you score a +$2 under this method.

    M.Jeffrey $21.50
    Crio $21.40
    P.Fuller $20.00
    Oges $19.30
    Litza $15.40

    D.Downer $2.10
    JTH $2.10

Now let us never speak of Derby day again! Let me know if the figures don’t appear quite right for your tips

  26. John Harms says:

Attendance at the Oaks carpark seems to be a genuine indicator in this tally.

    Thanks DD.

  27. JTH – what a day to jump off Alcopop!

  28. John Harms says:

He carried the weight very, very well. Clearly surprised me. Along with most of his fellow-nags. One of the more surprising days I’ve seen.

Sesame Street letter of the day: J

  50. John Harms says:

    Omen tip 2:

Bumped into Rod Oaten in Charles St yesterday. He was on the iron horse riding up to see his old Dad. I asked him what he liked in the Cup. He said he didn’t know what it was but that he likes the number 7.

    Cavalryman.

  51. John Harms says:

Terrific lunch at the All Nations yesterday.

We raised $280 in the raffle.

    Bets are:

    Trifecta for 52%

    1 2 4 8 10 12 20 24
    1 2 4 7 8 9 10 12 15 17 20 23 24

and First Four (boxed) for 11%

    1 2 4 8 12 20

  52. Mine in order:

    Ethiopia
    Dunaden
    Mt Athos
    Americain
    Maluckyday
    Red Cadeaux

    Good luck all

  53. John Harms says:

    Finally settled on

    20. Lights of Heaven
    9 Sanagas
    23 Zabeelionaire
    1 Dunaden

  54. I think at the All Nations lunch we disregarded Green Moon pretty early. Get that trifecta and you can retire. Anyone have it?

  55. I had it Dips, but only a hundred dollars worth. What did it pay?

  56. Skip of Skipton says:

Cox Plate fave who failed, then shat the Cup in. Jeune in 1994 was the last to do that double. All hail Lloyd. I love Lloyd.

I had both Jakkalberry and Fiorente in sweeps at the Tathra pub, so that covered most of the money I burned on the cup. 1.4 mil first four in NSW.

  57. Basso Divor says:

IF you had a spot on it Phanto, we can ALL retire! Tri paid 45 Gorillas!

  58. Just joking Basso. I had heard that it paid well but don’t even know what a trifecta is.

I am not any sort of a punter. I had some horse in a Hong Kong eatery once and it was very strong flavoured and stringy. It put me off.

  59. Basso Divor says:

Yes, I gathered you were fishing Phanto, hence the big “IF” to preface my response.
Here’s something for all the learned punters to wring their hands over. My infinitely better half is a one-day-of-the-year punter – goes by numbers and colours and seems to do well every year. Today she outlayed $30 on three each way bets for a return of $209 after picking 1st & 2nd. Sheesh!

  60. David Downer says:

    Dips,

Ahem, “we disregarded Green Moon pretty early” …except for one D.Downer who made a passionate case. Time and time again! G.Moon. G.Moon. G.Moon. In hindsight my educated opening plea perhaps had a touch stronger case than say, passing a guy in the street wearing the colours of the Ethiopian flag! (although there’s a much better almanac ring to that). At lunch’s conclusion, C.Down did turn and say “you know what’s going to happen now don’t you”

I was firmly in the Athos and Dunaden camps, so he wasn’t my best result, but I certainly had a piece of G.Moon at those ridiculous over-the-odds. It was a de-lloyding!

From the tips above, perhaps Budge was the biggest winner?

    DD

  61. John Harms says:

Sesame Street is full of it.

Lloyded first two days of Carnival. (Fawkner beat me on Derby Day).

    Feeling very very flat.

Worst Flemington on the punt ever.

Had $20 each way at $32 on Cascabel and when I looked again about 3 minutes later it was $48. It ran like it should have been a scratching.

Theo and Anna both picked Green Moon but we didn’t have a zack on it. It was just a shining beacon in the Family Trifecta. I do not intend divulging the adult selections.

  62. JTH – I’ll give you one guess who had Green Moon in our house. Yes it was Kate. When the race was on she was in her room happily singing along to a Taylor Swift CD.

    Swift – very appropriate.

  63. David Downer says:

Updated results here folks after Cup day. Fair to say some better performances today. Oges is now the clubhouse leader with a whole raft of healthy collects. Budge lands Green Moon only but enough to shoot into contention, and Lib Dalla has come from nowhere! P.Fuller still strong.

Once again, if anything looks amiss, let me know and I’ll recheck for typos etc…

    1. Oges $58.6 ($39.3 today)
    2. Budge $47.9 ($41.6)
    3. P.Fuller $47 ($27)
    4. Lib Dalla $45.8 ($45.8)
    5. Crio $42 ($20.6)
    6. M.Jeffrey $38.3 ($16.8)
    7. C.Down $32.9 ($15.6)
    8. Dips $30.2 ($22.3)
    9. D.Downer $24.8 ($22.7)
    10. Litza $24.8 ($9.4)
    11. AF $22.2 ($16.8)
    12. S.Morwood $11.2 ($0)
    13. Pal $10.2 ($0)
    14. PJF $9.4 ($3.4)
    15. JTH $8.1 ($6)

  64. Yes, I did get on Green Moon (thank you very much). Didn’t get fooled by the “bad” run in Cox Plate. It was only bad in that he failed to run up to expectations as favourite. A Flemington horse and trained by Lloyd who always has the Cup as the main aim.

  65. John Harms says:

    And here comes Lib Dalla

    Nightmare.

  100. Skip of Skipton says:

Great call on Happy Trails, JTH. The Dato Tan Chin Nam was a big form race.

  101. Skip

Just missed out in the Doncaster (was it?) at about 50/1. Ran a close fifth from memory. Have kept an eye on it ever since.

  102. David Downer says:

Ok punters, here is the final result.

The Black Caviar book is on its way to Goolwa, Oges has hung on! Midnight Martini saved his bacon over the hot-pot Silent Achiever. And Oges is the only one who finished in the black over the carnival, and just. The punters couldn’t get near it.

Crio and JTH charged late with H.Trails, but it wasn’t enough. Half a kilo less on S.Admirer might have seen yours truly with the bronze medal instead of the spoon! It’s a fine line this punting caper.

The quicker we move on to Sandown the better!

    Thanks for everyone’s involvement.

    1. Oges $82.8 ($15.1)
    2. Crio $79.2 ($26)
    3. Lib Dalla $69.6 ($16.7)
    4. M.Jeffrey $59.7 ($17.5)
    5. JTH $56.3 ($26)
    6. C.Down $55.5 ($11.8)
    7. P.Fuller $53 ($6)
    8. Litza $51.4 ($17)

    13. D.Downer $30.8 ($6)
    14. S.Morwood $11.2 ($0)
    15. Pal $10.2 ($0)

  103. DD and others in the competition – I have been surprised with the result (as roughies dominated this Carnival and form often went out the window )
As a loyal Croweater I still couldnt have Happy Trails which was nearly my undoing – (but thats punting ) Its a pity Lib missed a day or there could have been another result
The one thing funnily enough this competition has done is keep me off the punt this Carnival as I have been too busy studyng form and not game enough to risk my bets in cold hard cash (bit like Crio)
Its been a bit of fun and done with good humour and I hope it continues next year (Thanks DD for you accounting work too) and for the others involved.

  104. Well done Oges. Too good! Age and experience beats (relative) youthful enthusiasm. Thanks to DD for doing the hack work.

  105. I stepped up a class here and it showed.

    Great work DD.

oops, looks like Oges and Alcopop are the Spring Champs!

  108. Did a Vic Rail Crio but hope there is a bit of life still left in me
You had me thinking of second /third place when I saw you risked all on Happy Trails and it won
I sacked it after the Cox Plate but saw it only paid $13 so someone cleaned up

  109. Backed for a heap. I got $18 on Betfair.
Looking forward to an uneventful week and then Sandown.

  110. John Harms says:

    Congrats to Oges.

Please email me your home address.

Congrats to Crio. (I have a few books you can choose from given you ahve an Almanac).

    Thanks to DD.
