Sports Writers Festival – a terrific event organised by Francis Leach

This will be the third straight Sports Writers Festival I will be attending on the weekend of 28-29 October 2017 at the Broadway Rooms Rydges Melbourne, Level 1, 186 Exhibition Street Melbourne.  The Festival then shifts to Sydney for two days. The program runs from afternoon times to 9.30pm, so no early morning worries!

Francis Leach and his band of organisers have given us such a broad range of topics and speakers (again) and there is opportunity to chat to other sports nuts and chill listening to smart people talking about engaging topics.

For the last few years, I have enjoyed the atmosphere, the speakers, seeing so many familiar faces and new ones, and making a weekend of ‘being a sports writer and fan’ without any sporting activity whatsoever!

I recommend the day passes – see and hear everyone and enjoy the time at the event. If you see a Japanese man in St Kilda gear, make sure you say g’day to Yoshi Imagawa, our Japanese Almanac writer who is coming to Australia for this event. (see his earlier post to have a meal with him on the Friday night: http://www.footyalmanac.com.au/yoshi-visiting-melbourne-in-october/

See you there and make sure you say hello if you see me in my red, white and black glasses!

The Program in Melbourne will be:

Christopher Shen in conversation with Francis Leach on ‘Wrestling with Mental Toughness’

Susan Alberti talking about ‘The Footy Lady’ with Karen Lyon

Andrew Mangan in conversation with Francis Leach on ‘Arseblog in Australia’

Titus O’Reily in conversation with Francis Leach on turning Twitter into a career.

The Debate – Is there such a thing as too much footy? With Alicia Sometimes, Tony Wilson, Angela Pippos and Matthew Hardy

The Oration with Waleed Aly ‘Australia’s obsession with sport – what does it say about who we are?’

Getting excited already. Let me know if you want me to bring a copy of Siren’s Call or The Women’s Footy Almanac 2017 for you if you haven’t already got one. Always ready to flog a book or two.

  1. Hi Yvette,

Thank you for mentioning me attending the event.

By the way, I have found the changing program on Sunday afternoon (the first one on Sunday). When I booked about two weeks ago, it was Kevin Sheedy talking with Rohan Connolly (Footy History in 50 years). Do you have any idea what happened with this program?

    See you in Melbourne soon.

    Yoshi
