SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE – footy this Sat’dy

by Chris Riordan

There are some big games on in the ‘burbs this weekend.

Sunday will be inked on many fridge calendars. For juniors, it is finals time (good luck Matty on Sunday!).

But Sat’dy – the traditional footy day- will still have a store of big battles to draw you from the couch.

In the VFL the top two – Port and Willy – clash at the Borough.

In the inner-NorthWest, the EDFL’s ladder seems to be morphing weekly and now Strathmore are top and Oak Park second. They do battle this Sat’dy at Lebanon Reserve.

Out East, my interest in the EFL was piqued by a rundown in Sunday’s paper indicating that the East Burwood v East Ringwood game last Sat’dy had been scoreless up to ¾ time. Obviously this was not the case but, nevertheless, it has a remarkable result posted on the website with the Rams at home winning 3-16 to the Roos’ 3-8. It appears that 9 behinds was the sum from the final quarter! Can anyone shed light on this match?

Down the highway, in Ballarat, the main news appears to be that North Ballarat City will get to make their finals debut after last week’s win. http://bfl.vcfl.com.au/index.php?id=7&tx_ttnews[tt_news]=701&tx_ttnews[backPid]=8&cHash=42fa9ec4dd

This Sat’dy they host Melton South in the match of the day. Sunbury, with a bye, remain flag favourites after last week’s 205 to 14 belting of Sebastopol.

Of far more importance, I’m worried tonight (Tuesday) for the Mooroopna Football/Netball Club, having heard on the radio of shutdowns to the Ardmona/SPC industry in the town*. Sports clubs are the heartbeat of these sorts of places and I hope people can find some distraction amongst the confusion this week.  The Cats claim to have been around since 1877 and, though foundation members of the GVFL, times have been tough since the glory days of back-to-back in the mid-80’s. I love that their games record holder (312) is Billy Wong – any more info anyone?  They are having a really good 2011, only half a game from top, and, with a kind draw, may well get the minor premiership. The town needs a fillip so they’ll be my watch over the next month of GVFL, beginning with a “should win” at Seymour this Sat’dy.

There are lots of reasons to go to the footy this weekend. Rug up, be positive and enjoy our great game at whatever level you’re watching. And, please, let us know of your footy plans for this Sat’dy.

*The Weekly Times reports on line that workers will be offered access to support services after SPC Ardmona announced today (09/08/2011) that it would close its Mooroopna manufacturing plant.  The company said the strong Aussie dollar and increasing competition from cheap imported packaged fruit and vegetables had put the business under pressure and lead to the decision to close the Mooroopna site

  1. Chris – Williamstown host Port at Werribee.

    Crio,
According to the EFL website now, the quarter by quarter scores for East Burwood-East Ringwood
    were:
East Burwood (home side and winner mentioned first, as I can’t lay it out precisely):
    0-2 to 1-1
    2-7 to 2-2
    3-10 to 3-5
    Final 3-16 to 3-8
So the nine points in the final quarter apparently were 6 behinds to East Burwood (Rams) and 3 to East Ringwood (Roos)
    C. Ekers (East Ringwood) bagged two goals to be the multiple goal scorer for the match.

  3. thanks for the correction Mic…silly error since I saw you at their mismatch at Port earlier in the season!

  4. Chris – Easy mistake to make. The Gulls have been the comps nomads this season playing home games at 4 different venues (Werribee, Torquay, Wangaratta & Keilor) whilst hsitoric Morris Street receives a multi million dollar facelift.

To have achieved what they have thus far (2nd place on ladder + the inaugural Foxtel Cup) suggests it’s been an mighty fine effort from all concerned.

  5. Huge game at the Brunswick St Oval on Saturday in C-Grade Ammos. Fitzroy v (Old) Essendon. 5th v 4th with 2 premiership points between them. Get on board the Roys B-Grade Express!

  6. And if Fitzroy wins, MOC will perform his famous dance move, the MOC-arina.

  7. ripper option MO’C…curtain-raisers also?

We’re into finals up here (we’re training on Saturday possibly by that stage as the only team from the club still going). This weekend at Clinton Park (Gladstone) is first semi final day (knockout)…

8:30: BITS vs Brothers (Under 13’s)
9:45: Panthers vs Glenmore (Under 15’s)
11:00: Panthers vs Glenmore (Under 17’s)
    12:30: Yeppoon vs Panthers (Reserves)
    2:15: Yeppoon vs Gladstone (Seniors)

Next weekend is the 2nd semi final @ Boyne Tannum Country Club….

8:30: Glenmore vs Yeppoon (Under 13’s)
9:45: Yeppoon vs Gladstone (Under 15’s)
11:00: Yeppoon vs Gladstone (Under 17’s)
12:30: BITS vs Brothers (Reserves, will be playing)
    2:15: BITS vs Glenmore (Seniors)

  9. Ressies at 11.40am, Crio. Roy Twos safely ensconced in bottom half of Top Four. Auskick before that!

  10. Crio, cant post on Daffs “tribute” to Hayden Kennedy [elsewhere on the site] on that post, so what better place.
It is inevitable that H Kennedys first final was Dogs v Cats in 1992. It kicked off a long hate-hate relationship with Dog fans and umpire No 7. It was nice to be introduced to him at the inaugural Almanac launch at the Trades Hall and to find he was not as bad as I imagined. He even signed a copy of the book for an old mate. Pity he didn’t string it out another few weeks until he got us with 2 mins to go and a strong chance to make the 8 before doing it to us one more time. He will probably make a comeback next year if we look half a chance….
