Sat’dy Footy – 27th August

by Chris Riordan

Now here’s a great way to spend this footy Saturday, kicking off with a lunch and words from the great “Flea” Garry Wilson and continuing with an afternoon’s viewing at the magnificent Brunswick street ground. Check this invite…

Get a tram and plan to get home late as there are some ripper watering holes nearby.

Pushing further in to the northern suburbs, the VWFL GF is on Sat’dy arvo at Coburg’s ground. VU St Albans, unbeatable during the minor round, can avenge their low scoring loss to Darebin in the 2nd semi , having crushed Diamond Creek in the Prelim to set up a Grand Final seemingly destined all season.

If you’ve the time and inclination to head even further north, the Picola and District semis are on this weekend.

Jerilderie are hot favourites to win the North-West Division and will be expected to towel Berrigan at home and go straight in to the big dance. Sunday’s minor semi, at Yarroweh, will be interesting. Mathoura would not have expected to lose the Qualifier last week and now must defeat Blighty, buoyed by their win over Deni Rovers, to save face. More on Blighty at some other stage….”The Red Eyes” are one of my favourite teams, always searched for in the Sunday papers.

In the South-East Division (P+DFL), Shep East will be expected to roll through to the Granny, leaving Rennie to a Prelim against the winner of Sunday’s cut-throat battle between home side Waaia and Tungamah. I’ll leave any tips here to Josh Barnstable and co.

Amongst the bigger metropolitan leagues, it is worth highlighting the first round of EFL finals this weekend. With Noble Park earning a week off, the Saturday Qualifier, at Bayswater, is between Blackburn and Scoresby. The knockout clash is the following arvo @ Jubilee Park between Knox and Balwyn.

There’s a heap of final rounds and even more junior GFs to keep local footy fans interested this weekend.

To those retirees, well done.

To those who are pushing on, good luck and enjoy!

  1. The old Brunswick St Oval is a great place to go, even when the footy’s not on. I recommend fish and chips on the eastern hill as the sun sets.

  2. Richard Jones says

FINAL h and a round in the Bendigo F.L. this w/end, Chris.

The big one is Sunday when old QEO rivals (and co-tenants, there’s a time-hounoured cliche right there) South Bendigo and Sandhurst clash. South is currently 4th and the Hurst 5th.

But the added spice is that if newbies Strathfieldsaye Storm (6th) beat Maryborough (7th) at Storm HQ, Tannery Lane, Strath will be in the Five cum Sat. night.
So to stay in, Hurst just has to win on Sunday. South can’t be dislodged from 4th so have less to play for.

The following week it’s completely feasible the two age-old rivals could meet again in the cut-throat elim. final

The other big news in the BFL is that Nathan Thompson of Hawthorn and Kangas fame has signed to co-coach his first club Kyneton. He’ll share the coaching duties with 400-gamer Derrick Filo in 2012.

Thommo will give the recruiters hoping to lure some enterprising KPPs to the Kyneton Showgrounds next year something to spruik.

Golden Square, by the way, is going for win No. 27 or similar on Saturday. Square sits unbeaten on top of the BFL ladder and are unbackable flag faves with SportsBet.

  3. Geez, Crio, you jump on the RoyBoy Express just when it grinds to a halt. No finals this year sadly, but a strong finish to the season and they should get the consolation choccies on Saturday against the Old Boys from the School on the Hill (standing perfectly still). The lunches are good value, and it looks like Wilson has bumped Harms off the guest speaker list this week.
