Round 9 – St Kilda v Collingwood: Royal Wedding v Footy

St Kilda v Collingwood
7:25 pm, Saturday, 19 May 2018
Docklands Stadium, Melbourne

Seven years ago, I watched the special edition of Today Show (CH 9) on the internet covering the Royal Wedding (Princes William and Princess Kate). Then I tried to continue watching and found an Australian pub in Sapporo offered a live footy coverage. I saw it over the window and my thought was, what a funny game.

Later I found the sport fast and powerful, and I started following footy. But I had never thought I would pick St Kilda due to the schoolgirl scandal. Then departure of Ross Lyon later that year was also shocking.

However, the club’s plan to play footy in New Zealand the following year, brought me another thought that the club was trying to move on from negative events. As I mentioned in my first Almanac article published in October 2014, the Saints became my favourite AFL club.

Then another Royal Wedding changed the free to air program list. CH 7 decided to broadcast the wedding on the main channel and footy on the second channel (7mate).

This world event is important and could be seen as priority to cover, but why was the footy pushed away? Or did CH 7 expect all the Sainters to go to Docklands Stadium? I would attend the game no matter which channel broadcasted the match, if I lived in Melbourne.

On game day, I had to work during the game. I had planned to watch the last half of the match live after my shift, but the a last minute’s roster change kept me from watching the footy, like what CH 7 did.

Slow check out made by young Asians also kept me from checking the live scores and that made me grumpy and unhappy. The fact they left minutes after our closing time also added my frustration.

Finally I accessed the live score but we were behind and I hoped we would catch up and win. But at the end of the day, St Kilda lost by 28 points. It was another horrible night.

That margin made me want to watch replay, so I did on Tuesday night.

However I only saw Saints wasting opportunities in the beginning of the game. Tim Membrey took a mark in the goal square, but only scored one point. Kicking errors occurred all over again. I am sick and tired of seeing this sort of sloppy footy, so I didn’t bother not watching entire game with the replay.

What I was happy about was that Alan Richardson was coaching on the bench. Finally he seemed to listen to my advice that I wrote a few weeks ago here as an open letter.

But we couldn’t overcome Collingwood.

Early this week, Nick Riewoldt wrote a column on Fox Footy’s website talking about how players got refreshed after losses. He expresses how impressed he was of what Grant Thomas has done. He told players to be in cold water for ten minutes and then invited them to his house. Nick says being told to just go there and have fun is not working. I agree with him.

I really wish he could do mentoring tasks at the club as well as Leigh Montagna, Stephen Milne and Thommo. They would save the mighty Saints.

No more next year please. We have to get the pack and do the best. It’s not too late to climb up the hill. Let’s do the very best to beat Richmond on Saturday afternoon.

About Yoshihiro Imagawa

Love, passion and pride are seen on the footy that is the biggest part of my life. 1. St Kilda Club member: I am a passionate and crazy Sainter. Just hope we will win the second flag soon, especially after Dogs and Tigers having ended long premiership draughts. 2. The Osaka Dingoes Player and Public Relations Officer: Player number 44 that I chose to honour Stephen Milne with my wish being like a small forward like him. Lenny Hayes' hardworking attitudes are adopted on my trainings and practices. Nick Riewoldt's great plays are in my player audiobook too. 3. Writing: Here on the Almanac and also on the World Footy News. My skills utilise on great footy websites.

  1. Jarrod_L says:

I have to say that when I saw your coach on the bench, I did think about your letter Yoshi!

Let’s hope it has some positive effects on the Saints’ games in the future!

  2. george smith says:

Those pesky Royals have done more than their fair share to upset the footy watching public. Last royal wedding they put on Swans v Carlton in the rain, in Sydney, for all non-royal watchers. It’s history that Carlton played outstanding football in the wet to totally ruin my evening.

This time the footy was much more benign, Sydney v Freo for Sydneysiders, followed by the FA Cup, which shows that the English can get at least something right…

  3. Phillip Dimitriadis says:

    Great report Yoshi.
Maybe the Saints need to recruit Reverend Michael Curry as coach next year? He was more entertaining than the game that’s for sure…Terrible game of footy.

  4. G’day and thanks for your comments guys!

At first my apology not to respond early. I have issues being unable to log in the Almanac site with my iPhone and I was busy working, practising footy and watching yesterday’s Richmond v St Kilda live.

Jarrod – Thanks for your thoughts. I find positively in the game against Richmond yesterday afternoon despite the loss.

George – Good point of view. Everything seemed not good at last time for you but well done last week beating Fremantle. Footy meme says Royal Family vowing Freo aren’t rebuilding.

Phil – Cheers for your compliment. Sounds like St Kilda boys need fun?? He could be an entertaining assistant coach…

    Enjoy your footy!

    Yoshi
