Round 7 – Brisbane v Collingwood: Free-flowing footy (Floreat Pica Society)

To the Floreat Picas crew, a sunny Brisbane is a wonderful place for a Sunday arvo game of footy. A danger game. Expectations can sometimes weight heavy on The Pies. Lions have been going ok, and a win is due for them. But, if we are going to contend then we need to win the “winnables”. So much pre game warming up had us all in fine fettle as we entered the gates, my first to The Gabba.

The Lions came in with intent; and a quality midfield tested us heavily in our back half, with Zorko and Beams dangerous all game. De Goey was on from the start, and he certainly knows how to find a goal. His long bomb from outside 50 was all class and gets my nod as best on ground. The most pleasing thing was the even spread of contributors, Mayne had an early goal; Blair was involved; Mason took some strong last quarter marks; Varcoe is handy, with skill and pressure; Phillips was fantastic; Appelby shows a bit; Dunn good; loved Howe’s first half and snuck him in for a vote.

Murray and Stephenson are great additions to the side this year with the latter kicking the match winning goal, via good work from Phillips and De Goey. Pendles was on fire early, kicking one and setting up Treloar with a beautiful handball. Treloar is on fire as is Steele who gets my 2 votes. Busy all game and has class.

Brisbane stuck at it all night with Beams kicking a great skipper goal late in the last quarter. Quality player sadly missed. Great game of footy; free flowing and straight kicking at goals…and handy trait that we seem to have improved. We are real team – everyone contributed and stood up when required across the board. Song sang with plenty of gusto and – GET YOUR HOT PIES!!!!!!!!!! 4 points in the bank

VOTES
J. De Goey 3
S. Sidebottom 2
J. Howe 1
Honourable mentions to Thomas, Philips – both very, very good.

    Thanks M Mullins.
Just did enough, by all accounts.
But as you say, 4 points in the bank.

I wonder how that will help by the end of Round 23.

I am a bit concerned about this. After 7 rounds we still don’t know, if we open that box, whether we get a date with the lovely Penny, or a smelly dead cat. You’d think after 7 years we would know, but we don’t.

While our team seems to have foregone it’s amazing habit of kicking the ball straight to the opposition, there is still the old Collingwood bugbear of palookas going all Rocky on us, just to prove they’re not a bum…

However, after four years in Palookaville, it’s good to be looking forward to winning form for a change.
