Racing: Review from Caulfield on 19 September

Mark “Makybe” Freeman writes:

Great days racing at the Heath today, spoiled only by the starter’s shocker in the Rupert Clarke and the lightness of pocket (mine and Daff’s).
The Rupert Clarke was the first Group 1 of the spring, and was a debacle unfortunately. The well-fancied Gold Salute reared in the starting stalls, then did it again, at which point the starter decided to let them go.
Our one at odds, All American, jumped from the stall two down from the trouble, and you can see jockey Nick Hall turn to look towards the starter in the infield. He was one of a number of jockeys expecting the starter to call a false start, and when he didn’t, the jockeys had to get busy and start riding.
All American lost his good barrier advantage, and so all hope of winning. He ran on well at the close, and will keep for another day.
The form from the race should be largely chucked out.
The Underwood was a different story – great race with two top-class performers slugging it out. Crio’s fancy Heart of Dreams won the day at nice odds of $10 and better at agencies – hope you cleaned up, Crio.
Our other crack for the day, Hissing Sid, disappointed in terms of not winning, but both he and hot favourite Speed Gifted were unsuited by the slow early pace. Both peeled out in the straight and closed well out wide, finishing within a head of each other just behind the placegetters.
Sid should be further improved by the run, but time is running out for him to win a ballot-free race into the Caulfield Cup.
Plenty of great runs across the day, check em out on Bigpond.com.au and go to sport/racing/liveracing/archive.

We’re still in the black, $120 up, but in need of a good winner next Friday night, Grand Final eve at the Manikato Stakes/JRA Cup meeting at the Valley.
