Racing: Preview for Caulfield and Sandown on 29 and 30 August

Mark “Makybe” Freeman writes:

Punters, it’s all on again with a huge card at the Heath , while at Rosehill it’s the first Group 1 of the season, the Golden Rose for the three-year-olds. If you’re having a punt this spring, make sure you have a squizz online (bigpond is free) or on TVN at the action, as it’s all about having a look at them go around to gauge fitness and form.

I’m a big Mic Mac fan, and he’s suited by the 1400 of the Memsie, so I’ll blow most of Daff’s Monopoly Hunnert on him:

Melb R6 No.11 $80 win.

And Crio’s tip in the Liston, Orange County, got a shocking chop-out at the 200 and should figure in the finish, so we’ll have a quinella, Mic Mac and him, with a box trifecta chucking in Whobegotyou:

Melb R6 Quin No. 6, 11 $10
Melb R6 Flexi Box Tri 6,9,11 $10

And don’t forget the big jumps card at Sandown on Sunday. With the panic raised by the anti-jumps muppets, the jump season is fairly stuffed, and on Sunday finally the nationals are being run

I’ll be on anything trained by Ciaron Maher in the nationals (hurdle and steeple), and if you’re having a bet on Sunday, get on Lenny Xuereb’s Scenic Find, R6 No 15.

Good luck, punters.

  1. Another tricky meeting Mark. We’re still a couple of weeks shy of real action and this meeting is below my expectations.
The Rose is a beauty in Sydney and an interesting Gr 1. Trainers will shoot for the million and maybe these horses will be “over the top” come Guineas (and Derby).Love Gerald Ryan’s horse but it was poor last start and Little Lonhro looks up for this. Won’t back Denman but will be happy to see it salute.
At The Heath, the lack of pace makes the Memsie really difficult. MicMac looks likely to get a really cushy run but there’s no way I can back him at 6/4 first time at WFA. Nevertheless, backmarkers look stuffed. Almost ready to break my Von Costa rule ( but only when over 10/1) and Budge has made a strong case for Zarita as the “overs”.
RIOS looks the bet of the day in the “get out”.

Be happy to lay Zarita, she owes me! And has been gunna for so long now, but she does have smart second-up form. And you’re a brave man with Von Costa – he’s a thief extraordinaire, but will win a big mile when the pace is on and he’s down in the weights and we’ve all discarded him. I reckon Mic Mac will make the transition to wfa no worries – it’s the likely slippery track with the predicted rain that is a worry. It’s one of those factors the formguide just can’t cover – some handle slippery, some don’t, and usually it’s independent of genuine wet-track form.

A note for quaddie punters – the nice one-out in the first leg, Driffield Gold, is already scratched.

    good luck

  3. Zarita $42 on Betfair…that’s what we mean?
    Track should be fine.
Don’t dispute MicMac’s credentials, but at the odds and weight I’ll risk. Would have it in Quaddy.

  4. Sorry crio, I took the $44 and $42 Zarita. Now looking to get on the place.

  5. I also like G. Ryan’s in the Golden Rose – NOTE: BLINKERS ON!!

  6. Augusta Proud (R7), Zarita (each way R6) and Rios (R8) at Caulfield. Don’t leave Von Costa out of multiple on Memsie either – these are the odds you want to be on him.
Something e/w on Hus der Lieften (blinkers on) in the Golden Rose in Sydney.

  7. Mark Freeman says

Crio clearly you haven’t looked at the weather radar – pack a raincoat for the stand tomorrow

  8. Mark Freeman says

And let’s hope for a big run from El. I read last night that Jacquie Little lost the long battle, and it’d be great if El could run big to help lift that best-of-all-possible blokes Colin Little

  9. Mick Geary says

Well played Freeza, putting your hard-earned on Mic Mac, a quality beast. Is Whobee the new Veandercross?

  10. Always a concern when they all want to get off the fence in the straight but we’ll take it on face value for now.

Mic Mac passed the big test. Liked the way he knuckled down when challenged.

Von Costa de Loser. Seemed to have every possible chance. May not have been suited by track condition but there is ALWAYS an excuse for him. Give him LIFE!!

Zarita – tremendous run ($5.90 the place!). Got further back than I would have liked but really hit the line well. Follow her.

Thought Sea Battle and El Segundo were OK in this race also as were the 2 milers, Viewed and Efficient, considering the distance. Keep them in mind for later- both look on target.

Rios ran a horrible race after getting a good run in transit. Give him another chance.

Augusta Proud ordinary – too wet for her I fancy.

In Sydney, Denman looks to be a potential star. Let’s hope he can go on with it. Trusting ran on very well though no threat to the winner. Great effort by him being 3rd run in 3 weeks. Hus der Lieften was caught wide most of the way and battled on OK for 4th or 5th.
