Racing: Mic Mac change of plans worries us

By Mark “Makybe” Freeman

Interesting meeting at the Valley on Grand Final Eve, punters – but the heathens from Sin City continue to run their Group 1 George Main Stakes in the middle of The (actual) Premiership Quarter . . . even after they’ve won a flag.

Punting-wise we’re all gearing up for the Grannie and getting on the Norm Smith and first goals and half-time/full-time doubles, but Daff’s cash must be burned, and this being a racing column, on the races it shall be.

The Manikato Stakes on Friday night is a cracker. It’s the first time the Group 1 Manikato will be run on Grand Final Eve – formerly it was run on Feehan (Dato Tan Chin Nam) Stakes day – and three from our stable of favourites are lining up.

We’re hoping for a dead track only on Friday night, and while we’re keen Mic Mac fans, we’re don’t like horses’ programs being revised mid-campaign.  Mic Mac was originally on the Cox Plate trail, scored a couple of scintillating wins in the Auries Star and Memsie Stakes, but once Whobegotyou put paid to him in the Feehan, trainer Greg Eurell reefed him back to a sprinting campaign.

Nicconi, however, is all sprinter, on the up, already a Group 1 winner, and won the McEwan at the Valley recently with great authority. He’s the one for us, Daff.

We also like Secret Flyer, and will put him in a trifecta, along with Valley specialist Lucky Secret, promising three-year-old Wanted . . . and The Cat – The Cat is back, big Apache.

MV R6 no.6 Nicconi $80 win

MV R6 Tri 6,7/1,5,6,7,10,13/1,5,6,7,10,13 $20 ($20 = 50%)

Good luck, punters, and have a great Grand Final Day.

  1. Go easy on those Sydneysiders Freezer. I’ll probably be watching Hong Kong races during their Grand Final. Multi-task man!
