Crio’s Racing: Bubbles Bursting or Popping?

Bubbles will be the quaff of choice for “carparkers” when Spring truly arrives but, for now, it is bubbles bursting that pose dangers for racing enthusiasts.

As the good’uns reemerge, trainers and punters can so easily confuse ability with ambition.

Whilst it is rewarding to get an early kill there’s a greater danger of going off in the holster.

Sarajevo was a case in point last week. Like others who’d seen its debut last prep and then a dashing trial in recent weeks, it’s name was underlined as soon as The Rosebud runners were published. He was subsequently supported from 9/4 in to 13/8 late in betting and ran 4th. At better odds, this may have been a horse on which to speculate, but some coat-tuggers had correctly preached caution. At its impressive win in April, they reminded, Sarajevo had defeated horses which all remain maidens.

Winning punters wait. In the absence of the oracle Oges, now off-line somewhere in the Gulf Country, it was Cowshedend who provided the good oil last weekend – 2 from 2…

“really like Tony and Jake Noonan in the last with Zavada, gets a good gate and will sit on the pace. Reckless Assassin just about wins the 3rd. “ $10 the last winner! Well done.

The fixtures begin to take on a familiar rhythm from now. This Saturday is the old Liston Stakes Day….a 1400m G2 WFA (R8 – now the P B Lawrence), an 1100m 3yo SWP for C+G (R7- Vain Stakes), the girls’ equivalent G3 (R6- Quezette) and a Listed 1200m H’cp (R5- Regal Roller). Fields are pretty good for what is effectively still winter though the interest already will be beyond this meeting’s results, with especial focus certain to be on the return of Puissance de Lune and Foreteller in the main race.

Early Quaddy observations:-

MR6- 10 was a boom but bad gate. 1 and 3 the fancies. 4 value.

MR7- 6,5,10

MR8- don’t like the race at all. 8.

MR9- result race. 3,6

Sydney’s main race is the San Domenico for the new 3yo booms.

Any opinions or tips welcomed.

Good luck!

  1. Have yet to look at this weeks fields but I’ll get in early with a long range Spring tip. Be on any of the Japanese horses that get here. Quarantine issues have been resolved and Hana’s Goal is a reminder but don’t forget what Pop Art ( something like that) and Delta Blues did in the big cups a few years ago. You have been warned!

  2. cowshedend says

I’m with you big time Budge on the Japanese. Read that 3 are likely to come out Bande ,Admire Flight and Admire Ratki
In the always silly early markets on Betfair, Bande is 25’s and Admire Flight is 130’s.
Bande is entered for Caulfield as well.
Hope that memory has faded a tad for punters who don’t recall the smashing Pop Rock and Delta Blues gave them in 06.
Remember at the time the pundits saying that the Japanese will own the cup for the next decade

  3. Will Jackie Tse be coming back to ride?
That could get them beaten, anyone remember Danewin in the Vic Derby and almost every other race he rode it in.

  4. cowshedend says

How could you forget Jock, he teared up on Bob Hawkes shoulder.
Remember the next year when it went around and won the Mackinnon, and channel 10 were doing the coverage, they had their number 1 man Tim (how often can 1 man be wrong) Webster heading the coverage.
One of the Freemans was their racing expert and Tim asked if he “thought they made a blue not sending him to the Derby”……awkward silence……Freeman ‘He’s 4″… ad break

  5. at Sunny Yam’s insistence…poor Bobby Thomsen probably had Dye and Beadman sleeping outside the stables waiting for a call up.

  6. cowshedend says

Galagotis has 1 in the 4th Simmering, was awful in a very short prep in Jan this year, had a long lay off came back and won a trial this month at Cranbourne by 3, will be any old odds, but will have a couple of dina.
Also like the race fit Jamerica who gets 8kg off moment of change, will go well.
Could not split Puisance and Lidari in the Liston.
Atlantis Dream should bankroll the day in the first

Boy we are screaming out for a few WFA stars, the Cox looks to be very dissapointing

  7. Why does Weiry keep putting kids on Atlantis Dream, which looks a tricky ride? Plenty of room at Flemington, but J.Childs is the worry.
Morgan’s has to be the one that gets backed in the Liston.

  8. Skip of Skipton says

Jackie Tse wasn’t Japanese and had no connection to Japanese racing, did he?

Will Y. Iwata who rated Delta Blues a treat be coming back? Hope so.

  9. No Skip, we’re safe from Jackie’s cohorts. The Japanese rider’s Cup triumph revealed that Lettsy’s interviews were equally incomprehensible regarless of the language being “spoken”.

  10. Skip of Skipton says

Not really a fan of the interview with the puffed-out jockey or athlete straight after they’ve crossed the finish line. The horse/jockey/athlete just did their ‘talking’ 30 seconds prior. We all saw it. Leave them be FFS.

  11. Jackie on Danewin, yes and I remember Scriven on Octagonal in the Derby..but all is forgiven…I think.

  12. Think Star Rolling might need one more. Has no fresh form at all.

Bit keen on ARE THERE ANY in Race 4 at Caulfield. Think she been scratched a couple of times recently waiting for a dry track. Has excellent form first-up. Hard to beat.

One that looks over in Sydney is LAW in R5. Excellent 2YO including good win at debut so fresh form is good. Previously with Gai but upgraded to Waller now.
Plenty of hype on others but he looks good value at the quoted $13.

Just noticed SCANDIVA in R4 at Rosehill. Top drawer filly who has had 4 trials leading into this. Big hope.

  13. Boomwa
Pillar of Creation and maybe Zamorar in the “Liston” with an easy lead. Also like Felidea a bit early on
