Punter Looks at Forty (apologies to Jimmy Buffett)

Mother, mother cricket, I’ve heard you call
Wanted to bat upon your wickets
Since I was three feet tall
I’ve seen it all, I’ve seen it all

Watch the men who played you
Switch from Tests to toys
But with 5 days of leisure

You can unfold more treasure

Than most men have ever seen
Now it’s all noise
Lost all its joys

Yes, I am a pirate two hundred years too late
Cannons don’t thunder there’s nothin’ to plunder
I’m a near forty victim of fate
Playing too late

Bowled through the gate
But I’ve done my bit of one day
Twenty overs to fill in a Sunday
Made enough money to buy all of Lonny
But the greyhounds were never as fast
Dale snuck one more past
Never meant to last

I have been runless now for over two weeks
Passed out and I rallied and I sprung a few leaks
But I’ve got to stop wishin’, got to go fishin’
My forms at rock bottom again
Find a new game
Retirement’s too tame

I’ll go for my winter Shinboners
Get my hopes up, then late season fade
Need a new leader; a tough guy a loner
Show ‘em how the games played

Know all of the Triggs of the trade

Mother, mother cricket, after all my years I’ve found
Occupational hazard is, my occupations just not around
Feel like I’ve nicked it; no more 5 day cricket
The Kangas better want me around

Its time Brayshaw drowned

Tassie’s Tigers and a quick new greyhound

Excellent work Peter. Great use of a great song to make a great tribute.

  2. He went to the WACA, looking for answers to questions that he never found…………………………………………

……………………………………….Well the Jarps took his average, he left the crease for a beverage, after waving the big crowd goodbye……………………………

Love Jim Buffett. While at Teachers College I attempted to make a “film clip” of “A Pirate Looks at Forty” on a Super 8 Movie camera for an assignment. I was so proud of my effort though my lecturer thought it a bit daggy!Wonder what happened to that film? Enjoyed reading your take on the song.
