Press release: Victorian women’s footy team

from Leesa Catto and the VWFL

The Victorian senior women’s football team flies out on Tuesday the 2nd of June bound for Perth to compete in the 2009 AFL national women’s championships. The new look Victorian team boasts fourteen players making their debut in the Big V jumper with nine of those fourteen having represented Victoria at U18 or U19 level. The Victorian team is undefeated in state football and are in Division one where they will compete against Western Australia, Australian Capital Territory and Queensland.

The team has approximately sixteen hundred games of experience spread across the twenty five player squad and in 2009 the Big V will be led by VU St Albans star on-baller Shannon McFerran (C) and East Burwood ruck man Lou Wotton (VC). Darebin’s Daisy Pearce and East Burwood‘s Meg Hutchins round out the leadership group. Victoria are fixtured to play their first game against ACT on Wednesday the 3rd of June at Steel Blue Oval.  The AFL has announced that the Division one Grand Final will be played at Subiaco Oval prior to the AFL round 11 fixtured game West Coast Eagles V Geelong. In a first in 2009 the AFL has named the best on ground medal the Debbie Lee medal in recognition of the contribution made to the game by current VWFL President Debbie Lee.

Coach Leeann Gill said that she was looking forward to the challenge;

” The 2009 VWFL State team is a mix of youth and experience and is a blend of 2007 senior and under 19 state players as well as those who will be representing their state for the first time. Players vied for selection over a ten week period as part of the inaugural VWFL football academy.  They have all been training extremely hard and the effort has been outstanding. Versatility was the key to selection along with fitness and the ability to play a run and carry style of football, with the key element being foot skills.

This is a very exciting time as a new look Vic side will travel to Western Australia in June to take on the might of the other states”

VWFL President Debbie Lee endorsed these comments saying;

“The VWFL are pleased to announce the 2009 state team and congratulate all players participating in the AFL National Championships in Perth.   A new look squad with a vast representation from clubs will see a youthful, quick and skilful side. The next generation of footballers are emerging and it is great to see that some of these players have earned a Victorian jumper this year.

We wish coaches; players and officials the best of luck in what I am sure will be a successful Championship for the Vic’s.”
