Almanac Rugby League – NRL Finals Week 1: Sharks v Cowboys – 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6…..7?

The extraordinary result coming from last Saturday’s NRL Elimination Final between Cronulla and North Queensland leaves Cowboy’s supporters in the position that they would never have dreamt of.

Yes, this weekend local supporters have been asked to support the Silver Tails (Manly). They are told that this will be a one off , once in a life time occurrence.

The Townsville Bulletin reported on Tuesday, September 17, 2013 that : Cowboy’s winger Wayne Ulugia revealed that players had tried to tell referees of their seven tackle error during the play that eventually led to Cronulla’s opening try, but their cries fell on deaf ears.”

Mark Geyer has called for the introduction of the Captain’s Challenge as trialled in this year’s National Youth Competition.

The outpouring of emotion in North Queensland has been unprecedented and even surpasses the hurt felt after last year’s final’s game against Manly.

One Brisbane – based Sports Lawyer ,Tim Fuller from Hunt Lawyers believes clubs such as North Queensland who have had their season ruined through “momentously bad decisions” could unleash court action.

He stated in today’s Townsville Bulletin article (18/09/2013) from Ben Dorries: “ In my opinion, the NRL contract would not be sufficient to prevent a court from intervening in a momentously bad decision.”

Fuller went on to say that in his opinion the public interest test would apply triggering court action.  He (Fuller ) added: “To be clear, it would have to be a decision of momentous proportions , and negligently made.”

Local economist , Colin Dwyer said the city would lose close to half a million dollars on transportation, parties and food in association with Cowboys not proceeding in the finals. Publicans were not happy as they said without the

Cowboys proceeding in the finals there would be a dramatic drop in punters coming to  the pubs this weekend as evidenced after the Manly- Cowboys game last year.

North Queensland supporters were also infuriated by Cronulla Captain Paul Gallen’s comments and telling northern supporters to “suck it up.”
