Going to Melbourne after living in League infested Cairns for a holiday
in Melbourne is very different.
My dad and grandma came for the footy and to see my uncle in Coburg.
As we made our way through the Fitzroy Gardens we all checked that we
had our tickets ready and that they were all correct and we talked about
how we were going to miss the Buddy Show. As I scanned my ticket and
walked through the gates with my Kokoda jumper on with Brent Guerra’s
number on the back wishing he was playing, when dad brought a case of
beer over and spilt it all over grandma we all had a laugh. Now to find
our seats. If you have never been to the row of MM it is the row right
at the top of the Olympic Stand. From here I could see buildings all
around. Grandma was determined not to walk down until the game was done.
The Hawks started well with a few early goals. Shoenmakers kept Cloke
quite while Lewis kicked away. Half-way through the second quarter my
dads favourite chant started:
BBBBBBRRRRRUUUUUUUUUUUEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSTTTTTTTTTTTT !!!
It echoed around the ground every time he kicked or marked.Looking into the coaches box I briefly saw Alastair Clarkson arm fly around. As I later found out, he punched a hole in the wall . It was all Hawthorn’s game in the second
half, kicking away and making Eddie and Joffa sad. Dad and I sang the
song loudly while Grandma and Uncle Robbie went to descend the mountain
of stairs. As usual we had to sprint to Jolimont station probably
because Robbie kept taking pictures of randoms. What a great game even
if Hodge,Guerra and Buddy didn’t play and we were in MM the Hawks still
flogged them 138 to 91
