Melbourne Cup tip – take a cardigan

by Brett Dutschke

The early tip for the Melbourne Cup is for brisk winds and a high of about
20 degrees, according to weatherzone.com.au, so it will be worth taking a
jacket or cardigan.

Cool southerly winds will develop by Cup Day and these will bring in some
cloud and possibly a shower on the day. Racegoers may get away without an
umbrella given that showers, if they occur, should only be brief. But there
may still be enough sunny breaks during the day to get a little burnt, so
sunscreen shouldn’t be left home either.

In the lead-up to Tuesday there’s a reasonable chance of a few showers which
may be enough to soften the punter’s grassy areas and also the track. Check
weatherzone.com.au to keep up-to-date with the latest forecast.

But between now and early next week it will be warm, the warmest few days
since early April.

The coming warmth is a little unusual for October due to northerly winds
persisting for a few days before a cooler change arrives.

If Melbourne reaches 28 degrees in each of the next three days, it will be
the first time in 12 years since this has happened in October.

  1. Brett – 30.6 degrees was the max. today. That’s one day down and two to go. Further to your comment, if we do crack 28 degrees tomorrow and on Derby Day, it will be the first time since 1866 that the LAST three days of October have been 28 or higher. The Derby winner in 1866 was Sea Gull. Two words, first starting with “S” – maybe good omens for Shamoline Warrior and/or Southern Skye.
