Media release – from the AFLFA: Fans relish the chance to have their say on all things AFL

This is a media release from the AFLFA published here verbatim:

AFL FANS ASSOCIATION (AFLFA): “GIVING FOOTY FANS A VOICE”

Grassroots fans will reveal what they love about AFL footy and what they think needs improving at next weekend’s first AFL Fans Association fan forum.

The AFLFA will run the free forum in Melbourne on Sunday, 24 June.

Fans like St Kilda tragic Yvette Wroby are relishing the chance to have their say. “I love the special rounds like Indigenous and Pride,” she says. “Footy is for all.”

Yvette, who wrote Siren’s Call and is a Footy Almanac editor, wants more prominent AFLW promotion and TV coverage but less “match day experience” glitz.

“I hate the entertainment noise at games as that is the time I catch up with family and friends,” she says. “Leave some air space for conversation.”

AFLFA president Gerry Eeman says the association welcomes the chance to have an intimate in-depth chat with the game’s biggest stakeholder.

“The forum is a great opportunity for the AFLFA to do some deep listening to the game’s fan base,” Gerry says. “It’s a simple but effective way for fans to give voice to their experience and wisdom.

“We want to hear what fans have to say, what they love, and what needs improving. This will be their forum.”

Victorian Women’s Trust Executive Director Mary Crooks AO is helping to organise the forum and will attend with AFLFA patron Susan Alberti AC. Richmond Football Club has donated the venue.

Grassroots fans will drive discussion about what they love about football and raise issues such as affordability, the match day experience, ticketing, scalping, Grand Final ticket allocation, scheduling, rule changes and reducing congestion.

Richmond Cheer Squad member Sherryn Jarrett wants more general admission bays. “I couldn’t get ground level seats against St Kilda for my 80-year-old mum for under $30 above general admission when it was half empty,” she says.

The fan forum will start at 10.30am for 11am-1pm on Sunday, 24 June, in Richmond Football Club’s Maurice Rioli Room in the Swinburne Centre at Punt Road Oval. All fans are welcome but must register their attendance at bit.ly/AFLFA-Forum. Media representatives are also welcome.

The above fans and AFLFA president Gerry Eeman are available for interview and photos.

This is a great chance for fans to meet, discuss what they like about footy and the issues that concern them, and to really have a say. It should be an interesting session!
