Williamstown CYMS claimed second position on the VAFA D2 ladder with a 155-point mauling of bottom placed Yarra Valley Old Boys at the Fearon Reserve on Saturday. The game was effectively over as a contest when the CYs kept Yarra Valley goal-less in the first quarter, despite the visitors having first use of a strong wind. Leading by 4 goals at the first break, Williamstown put the result beyond doubt in the second term by kicking ten goals to one to go into the half time break with a mammoth 84 point lead. Yarra Valley re-grouped somewhat after the break and were able to win their share of the ball during the third term but were wasteful up forward, kicking only one goal from seven scoring shots. The revival was short-lived however, as Williamstown seized complete control during the last term to kick twelve unanswered goals to register their biggest win of the year.

Next week’s local derby between Williamstown and Old Westbourne promises to be a willing affair as Williamstown needs to win to ensure it retains the coveted double chance and Westbourne needs the four points and a big boost in percentage to have any hope of overhauling fourth placed Therry Penola.

Midfield general Julian Hatfield continued his recent good form with another fine game out of the center square and around the ground. He had a capable ally in rover Matthew Lishman who showed plenty of zip in and around the packs. Up forward there was plenty of opportunities and Will Cooper, Christian Elliott, James Wong and Zac Read used their advantage in pace and skill to dominate their opposition backmen, kicking 18 goals between them and setting up many others as well. The CYs defenders didn’t have much to deal with for most of the day and whenever they did it was Jarrod Tranter who led the way, often turning defence into attack with his hard running and intelligent disposal.

In the early game, Williamstown CYMS reserves were able to guarantee a place in the second semi final with a solid 34 point win over a tenacious Yarra Valley. The home side made good first use of a strong first quarter wind to set up a 31 point lead at the first break. They were able to hold the visitors during the second term and at half time were 33 points in advance of Yarra Valley. The second half was played at good intensity from both sides, but Yarra Valley could make no impact on Williamstown’s lead and the home side was able to run out comfortable winners over a visiting combination that ran the game out right to the final siren.
