Local footy and netball (and other sports): tell us where and when your side is playing finals

G’day Knackers

With so many of our readers and writers involved in local sporting clubs, I thought it would be a nice opportunity for you to let us know where your side is playing finals – whether you be a player, coach, helper, fan.

Add the details in the comments below.

Some of the sides I keep an eye on include Fitzroy (missed out but stayed up), Minyip-Murtoa (fourth), Willy CYMS (second on the ladder – well done Guru, Smokie and crew), Melbourne University Blacks (top in the A’s, and the thirds have also made it).

Adelaide Lutheran just missed out.

Adeliade Uni – Rulebook, tell us what’s happening to all your sides.

Let us know.

May the best side win,

JTH

  1. The Williamstown FIDA team (the intellectual disability league) is in the Division 1 Grand Final next Sunday 31 August at Central Reserve, Waverley, starting at 2.30pm. The Seagulls will be playing the Kananook Bulls. Both teams only lost two games in the ten game season, and won their semi-finals easily last weekend. It may well be a matter of the Seagulls’ speed versus the Bulls’ height and marking power.

  2. As touched on by John above…:
Williamstown CYMS (D1 in the Ammos) face off against the undefeated Therry-Penola in the 2nd Semi-final on Saturday at Bill Lawry Oval, Northcote.
The reserves curtain-raiser will also feature the same two clubs.
The CY’s under-19 team play Old Ivanhoe in a 2nd Semi-final at Old Ivanhoe’s Chelsworth Park also on Saturday afternoon.
    Go CY’s!

  3. John,

My son Jack O’Leary plays for the Payneham Norwood Union Falcons in the A2 Ammos in Adelaide. They started slowly and after 2 games were 1 and 1 – finished the season on top at 17/1 and have a week off to get everyone fit and ready for the 2nd Semi on Saturday week. Coached by the legend of Norwood FC Garry McIntosh they have a mainly young group (around 10/11 from Marryatville High School) and have been playing some excellent footy, with their big full forward Nick Jolly winning the A2 goalkicking – albeit with a (for him) modest total of around 57 goals.
Will keep you updated on the outcome.
    Cheers.

  4. Dene Macleod says

Three 2nd semi finals for Williamstown CYMS AFC in the VAFA this weekend:

SENIORS v THERRY PENOLA, 2PM @ BILL LAWRY OVAL, WESTGARTH ST, NORTHCOTE (30 G11)

RESERVES v THERRY PENOLA, 11:40AM @ BILL LAWRY OVAL, WESTGARTH ST, NORTHCOTE (30 G11)

    U19s (SECTION 3) v OLD IVANHOE, 2PM @ CHELSWORTH PARK, IRVINE RD, IVANHOE (31 G10)

A win by the Seniors would see the club make Premier C Grade for the first time in its history.

  5. Malcolm Ashwood says

Adelaide University FC have the Chardonay Socialists coached by Dirty Darien. http://www.footyalmanac.com.au/we-will-fight-them-on-the-beaches/#comment-411712. Playing Ugly ( Unley ) at 10.15. In a 1st Semi and the C Grade coached by
Simon Ritchie aka Pimp and the C men playing North Pines for a win at Bob Neil number 1 at 2.15 also in a 1st semi before heading over the road to Bob Neil number 3 to barrack for the legs v the blues Iin the SANFL qualifying final
( shotgun I am still going thru counselling your colt not playing for the blacks )

  6. Malcolm Ashwood says

A typical Chardonnay Socialists match report always guarantees a good laugh http://www.footyalmanac.com.au/chardys-v-smithfield/ hopefully will attract a good crowd Sat at Kingswood at 10.15

  7. You won’t like this Rulebook! Go the Unley Jets. Should be a good battle at Kingswood, which I’d be confident is a muddy mess. If you win the toss, kick to the Belair Road end, as it’s significantly downhill.

  8. Yarra Junior Football League, Under 14 Brown, the mighty Hawthorn Citizens play minor premiers Bulleen-Templestowe, Sunday 12.30pm in Kew.

First plays second, only percentage separated the two teams at the end of H&A. This will be the fourth meeting this year, with one draw, and B-T getting the chocolates in the semi two weeks ago by one straight kick.

    Go Citz!

The Mercury, our weekly community paper, run by volunteers, will be a sea of Red and Black for the next few weeks.
Our wonderful scribe Alister will be pleased when the footy is over is all over as he writes for our paper every week. He has put in a sterling effort.
Our proof readers also do a great job reading the sport as none of them are sporty and only a couple of us follow the footy.
The town will truly be celebrating at least for the first week.
Surely some can progress each week

  10. Andrew Else says

With one home and away match to go:

Melb Uni Blacks Seniors – Will finish on top and will play St Bernards in the 1v2 semi (final 4 on 6th Sept. They also play St .B’s this week in the last round.

Reserves – Need to beat top-placed St. B’s on Sat to finish 4th.

Thirds – Will finish 2nd no matter what the result against St.B’s this week. Will play Old Xavs (1st) also on 6th Sept at 9:20

All finals at the wind tunnel (aka Elsternwick Park)

    The Emmys

  12. I’m off to Wangaratta for the Ovens & King Grand Final in mid-September; widely expected to be a re-match of the 2013 Grand Final where Milawa downed Glenrowan. The Tigers will be looking to avenge their loss to the Demons last year – IF both teams make it through. With the exception of Tarrawingee though, Glenrowan and Milawa are the length of the Flemington straight ahead of the rest of the comp, so something extraordinary would need to happen for these two sides to miss out on the league’s GF.

My boys – Bright – play Tarrawingee in a sudden-death clash this Sunday. I’m pretty sure it will be curtains for Bright (no pun intended). Happy to be proved wrong.

  13. Unley Mercedes Jets in the D3 (SAAFL) 2nd semi at home……
Saturday 30th of August Super Semi UMJ Saturday at Jet Park
10:15 C Men vs. Adelaide Uni (1st Semi)
    12:15 B’s vs. Pembroke (1st Semi)
    2:15 A’s vs. Modbury (2nd Semi)
This is the club’s biggest day at Jet Park. Get out and cheer on the lads. BBQ, Downstairs Canteen and Bar, Upstairs Bar, Electrotek Grandstand and of course some great footy.

btw u15 and u16.5s are in the granny Satd’y week.

And Mickey Randall; the oval is if anything too dry, council watered the centre square today to put back some softness!

  14. No personal investment beyond the tribal; VFL Elimination final this Saturday 2pm.
    Collingwood v Sandringham
    Victoria Park.
    Sunny.
    Light winds.
    21oC.
    Aiming to take the buds.

  15. Sadly the Dandaragan Saints 8.9 (57) went down to Moora Rovers 18.19 (127) on Saturday in the First Semi of the WA Central Coastal Midlands Football League. Took the drive a few times during the season to watch my nephew and Almanacker Brandon turn out for Dandaragan, after a few years out of footy. He got 34 touches at CHB in the loss, so the season has been great bonding with mates for him and a good stepping stone back to his goal of playing WAFL.
I’ve really enjoyed the wholehearted nature and simpler structures of country footy.

  16. Dennis Gedling says

The woman next to me at work is in a major netball final soon because the other netball players when walking past her desk ask her about said netball final.

For my WAFL masters team the Crocs there are no finals for us because we don’t have them. It makes it easier to plan our mad Monday.

  17. Coburg in their first stand alone season in the VFL had five great wins, and I reckon things look good for 2015, Fitzroy in the B Ammos looked like making the finals mid season but had a rough trot losing some winnable games. They had enough runs on the board however to stay in B next year. MHSOB on the other hand had but one win for 2014 and will play in Division 2 of the Ammos next year. When will the drop stop? Lorne the powerhouse in the Colac League for decades finished stone motherless last and things look grim for the future. And over in the land of the unwashed, Barnsley who dropped down from Championship to League one have had two good wins already and are fourth. That should put a smile on the lads in the Fitzwilliam Pub.

  18. willunga under 13s G2 netball team playing meadows at SUNA morphettvale need to win to play McLaren flat or clarendon in prelimary final, last 2 years been knocked out first round, this year we have a stronger team to get us through

  19. Dave Nadel says

Last Sunday I went to Portarlington Football Ground to watch Queenscliff Coutas beat Barwon Heads Seagulls in the Elimination Final in the Bellarine Football and Netball League. The Coutas led all afternoon after the first ten minutes. It is always hard to win a flag from fourth or fifth place in a Final Five structure but the Coutas have most of their injured players back and have hit form at the right end of the season.

  21. Yarra Junior Football League, Under 14 Brown, the mighty Hawthorn Citizens play minor premiers Bulleen-Templestowe, Sunday 12.30pm in Kew.

    Hawthorn 4 6 30, 4 6 30, 7 12 54 12 18 90 def.
    B-T 1 2 8, 6 8 44, 6 10 46 9 11 65

Wind was a major factor unil the final Q when it stopped and just became a slog. An early goal to B-T in the last meant a 2 point lead, Citz got out to 16 points, then back to 2, before a flurry of late goals sealed a 25 point win, first win over the Bullants in 4 matches this year.

A tear in the eye as your humble scribe’s son received the Norm Smith!

    Go Citz!
