Knacker bags play award

The National Playwright Competition awards were presented at the Richmond Library Theatrette on Thursday.

I managed to snag second prize out of the thirty entries from around Australia so it was number four for me over the last eight years in this particular competition.  Getting a placing every two years has been enough to keep me well and truly motivated to submit entries.

So this not a footy story this time but definitely a writing story.  As JTH says in the Almanac, contributors to that book come from all walks of of life and backgrounds often with an element of ratbaggery in them.  So I would like to give the National Playwriting Competition a bit of a plug for anyone interested in writing one-act 30-40 minute plays. Once you see a copy of a script and basic requirements in presentation etc, I would say ninety-nine percent of Knackers could put something together for the competition which is preparing already for it’s 14th year.

It’s a great outlet for writers and you would be helping  this particular amateur arts association keep going where it is run on the smell of an oily rag. As I have said previously, it gives you a chance to see your work produced and performed on stage and if you crack it for your first one like I did in 2005, you will be well and truely hooked.

So if anyone is interested, the details can be found on the Kew Courthouse Arts Association website.

About Neil Anderson

Enjoys reading and writing about the Western Bulldogs. Instead of wondering if the second premiership will ever happen, he can now bask in the glory of the 2016 win.

Congrats Neil. what was your play called?

  2. N eil Anderson says

Thanks Andrew, the play was called ‘Michelangelo Wore Blundstones’. The story of a painter/renovator who gives good quote and whose work is first-class because he is so particular. Trouble is, the homeowners find he’s still working on the house two years later. Based on the story of Michelangelo painting the Cistine Chapel ceiling year after year and the Pope down below never really knowing what stage Mick is up to.
The same scenario happened at my place earlier this year where the project went more like two months over, so I exagerated just a tad, added the drama, a few comedic lines and a happy ending.
The finalist placings are made by judges who base their decision on the scripts entered rather than the performance on opening night. As it turned out the cast of my play and the general performance was considered best on the night anyway…at least by my biased family and friends.
