Jeremy Cameron – The Next Big Thing?

BY – JACKSON CLARK

Just how high is the ceiling for Jeremy Cameron in terms of potential as a footballer? Although it is early stages there is little doubt the Greater Western Sydney Giant will headline the next wave of dominant key forwards in the AFL.

Cameron is originally from Dartmoor, a town that is 20 minutes from the South Australian border and has a population of about 200. He has handled the transition from small country town to the big stage at AFL level without skipping a beat. The 196cm key forward burst onto the scene last season to kick 29 goals in 16 games to win the Giants’ leading goal kicker award. His performances were so impressive that he was also awarded the AFLPA Best First Year Player award. He has great athleticism for a big man, strong hands, good at ground level and a long, accurate kick on goal. It is just about the complete package for a dominant forward. Giants coach Kevin Sheedy commented that Cameron “had one of the best debut seasons of any young forward (he has) seen in more than 40 years in the game”.

While many players often face the dreaded “second year blues” after coming off a terrific first season, Cameron has progressed in leaps and bounds in 2013. After booting 4.4 against Geelong, Cameron’s season tally is at 31 goals and he is up there with the main contenders for the Coleman Medal. The fact that Cameron plays for a low-drawing team in GWS means that his performances are often underrated. But he is one of the main reasons people tune in to GWS games.

His improvement from a 16-year-old in his first full season of football playing for Dartmoor seniors to being one of the most exciting young key forwards in the AFL is amazing. He kicked 69 goals for the season playing with Dartmoor and it is not completely out of the question that he could repeat this feat in the AFL within a year or two.  It is scary to think of how good he may become after another couple of years of development and when the GWS side improve as a unit.

  1. Jackson, I must admit Jeremy Cameron had got under my radar. Not anymore. Strong mark, mobile and knows where the goals are. Played a terrific game against the Cats and could easily have finished with six or seven. Just turned 20. An outstanding prospect.

  2. Pamela Sherpa says

I’m rapt that I had Jeremy Cameron’s signature on my Giants cap before he played his first game .

  3. Peter Flynn says

    He’s uncanny.

    Thanks Jackson.

  4. Richard Naco says

He was simply superb yesterday. The skills are definitely there, but his engine is also massive & he gave Tommy Lonergan fits on Saturday. He is a delight to watch, even when it’s your team that he’s performing against.

He is going to snag a Coleman or three well before he’s done.
