Issues for Royals and a reminder for Tigers by Les Everett

WAFL logoWAFL round five…

Five rounds in and East Perth haven’t won a game. On Good Friday at Leederville the Royals were absolutely thrashed by Subiaco. But does it matter? What’s the purpose of East Perth Football Club? Are they are a bit of the West Coast Eagles or a real club?
The Lions blew the game away with a seven-goal second quarter and didn’t let up in the second half. Liam Ryan kicked six goals and the much-improved Max Walters got three. Aaron Heal controlled the defence and is it too early to talk about Chris Phelan and the Sandover Medal? There wasn’t much to write home about for the Royals but Shayne Hille kicked three goals and Nathan Blee had another good game.

Subiaco 20.15 (135) East Perth 6.8 (44)

West Perth responded after their horror outing at Fremantle last week with a brilliant first half at Rushton Park against Peel. The Thunder made a game of it by scoring 6.2 to 0.6 in the third quarter but the Falcons were too strong in the end. Impressive defender Scott Simpson did the job in the ruck for West Perth, while Luke Meadows, Trent Manzone and Aidan Lynch were lively and Tyler Keitel kicked three goals. Matt Taberner covered a lot of ground for Peel and kicked three goals, Cameron Sutcliffe led the revival and Josh Mathers played well.

West Perth 15.18 (108) Peel 11.7 (73)

SchloithekicksmallClaremont knew they were in for a test at Fremantle Oval in the third Good Friday game. It turned out to be a touch-up. It was a powerful performance by South Fremantle with 17 goals without a notable scoring contribution from any of their esteemed big forwards. Haiden Schloithe (right) and Tim Kelly were again brilliant while Blayne Wilson, Blaine Johnson and Dylan Main put in strong displays. Jake Murphy was a willing goer for the Tigers.

South Fremantle 17.9 (111) Claremont 6.10 (46)

After the Saturday game at East Fremantle Oval Swans remain undefeated and the surprise of the competition while the Sharks are still waiting to open their account. It was tight all day with Swan Districts running away in the last quarter scoring 5.7 to 1.0. Ricky Cary kicked three goals and again showed he’s enjoying his new freedom, Tony Notte enjoyed giving Tallan Ames a happy 250th and Corey Gault had his best game of the year. Cam Eardley was the best for East Fremantle and Ryan Lester-Smith showed he’s getting back to his best.

Swan Districts 12.18 (90) East Fremantle 8.10 (58)

The ladder: South Fremantle 16; Swan Districts 16; Subiaco 16; Claremont 12; Peel 8; West Perth 8; Perth 4; East Perth 0; East Fremantle 0.

Next week: Saturday: Claremont v Subiaco (East Fremantle Oval); East Perth v Perth; West Perth v Swan Districts. Tuesday: South Fremantle v East Fremantle.

  1. This bloody alignment is killing the once-mighty East Perth Royals, Les.
Being instructed to play an AFL-style possession game goes against what the WAFL stands for.
More possession = more chances to turn the ball over.
Stop chipping the ball around in defence and take the game on, Royals.
And knock the alignment on the head – we want the real East Perth back.
