I still cling onto Hawthorn’s last win against Geelong in the 2008 Grand Final.I wear my ’08 premiership shirt around and stare at my WEG poster for ages. I get so frustrated and angry every time that those pesky Cats just come back and win by less then ten points. I have always wanted to see Eddie Maguire and Joffa crying at the same time, but over all of that I wanted to see Geelong lose in a Final.
Hawthorn’s shaky years after 2008 have finally stopped and it looks like they will be able to win now that Geelong are out. It has finally happened, Freo those people in purple, have beaten them. After having an epic fail in the first quarter Freo kicked away freely and Geelong could not touch it. Stevie J was out after getting suspended for a vicious bump. Freo won, bringing revenge to Hawthorn and giving Hawthorn another premiership chance. Come on Hawks.
Zac Dawson played well on Tom Hawkins in the absence of Luke McPharlin. Hayden Ballantyne and Michael Walters led a vicious forward fifty attack. Pavlich stole the show with six goals from the help of Michael Barlow (26 possessions) and Stephen Hill (21 possessions). Matthew Scarlett ended his career well with 10 disposals while stopping Mayne from kicking any goals.
But I am happy Geelong are out and as the final siren goes I finally hope the Geelong reign is over.

Michael, I think the Geelong reign is over…for a couple of years. The legion of Cats fans have been conspicuous by their absence on this site over the last 2 weeks. I’d be very surprised if the Hawks don’t win the flag this year.
Michael, I have a friend HAwk supporter who owes a friend Cats supporter about 16 slabs of beer. It started off with them betting a six-pack on a game, and each new game the Hawk supporter says: Surely this time! How about we double or nothing?
There were numpty Hawks fans last year sprouting off about how lucky the Cats were to play the Pies in the GF last year instead of Hawthorn.
It of course makes no sense and is a moot point. Having said that, Hwathorn looked very vulnerable last night and its lucky they were playing Adelaide rather than the Cats!
Would have been the greatest thing to happen this year if the Hawks lost last night!
Good article Michael. Keep writing.
However I believe the Cats will win another flag before you you have your “L’ plates, but the good news for you is that the Hawks will beat Geelong before then as well.
I also apologise to the Bogan Lord. I have been very distracted over the past four weeks watching my son play in a Wynyard Cats flag; first finals appearance in 13 years and first flag in 33.
I have been noticing the demise of a few dead certs over the past few weeks but know how much the supporters are suffering and have stayed away.
Cheers, Phant (Happy Phant, that is)
