In A-League of its Own: 12/2012

Tom’s weekly outlook on the A-League

Melbourne Victory has begun to resurrect their season with a 2-1 win over league-leaders Central Coast Mariners at AAMI Park on Friday night. Despite going 1 down, the Victory were the ones coming from behind to grab points this time around, with goals to Carlos Hernandez and Harry Kewell doing the job for the home side. Tomas Rojic of the Mariners opened the scoring just 9 minutes in, but Hernandez equalized the game with a stunning 25 yard hit. 7 minutes into the second half, Kewell put his team in front with a first time volley from a narrow angle. The result puts Melbourne just 2 points out of the top 6, where cross-town rivals Heart are placed.

Melbourne Heart has suffered a setback in the lead up to the finals with a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Newcastle. The Jets continued their rampaging form from the week before, putting 3 past Heart. Jeremy Brockie, Ryan Griffiths and Michael Bridges scored to place the Jets 5th for the first time this season. Heart’s next game is at home this Friday night against Gold Coast where they should win and win comfortably.

Brisbane Roar has continued their climb back up the table by beating ladder rivals Wellington 2-1 at the Cake Tin. Besart Berisha and Mitch Nichol’s goals were enough to put Brisbane back to 2nd on the table.

Perth Glory has failed to establish a top 4 position after a home defeat to Sydney FC. Brett Emerton and Bruno Cazarine’s goals were enough to hold off a late charge from Perth which included a goal from Billy Mehmet.

  1. Hey Tom,
What’s your feeling on the Heart’s struggles since Christmas?

  2. I remember commenting that Heart were “gone” when Fred got injured…they were not great before he found form.
