Holidays, overdosing on ‘beach food’ and the desperate search for a footy haven

For the first time in a while the family had planned a trip to Rosebud/Sorrento during Easter, and so with our cousins, two packed cars bursting with food, bags and alcohol, off we went.

At first the drive was great, I admired the little chapels, feeling pretty upset that I couldn’t be at our church myself for our beautiful Good Friday service. Then it hit me.

-“Dad, does the holiday house have Foxtel? Because if it doesn’t you’re driving me back to Melbourne.”

-“If it doesn’t we’ll just find a pub or something to watch it, don’t worry!”

Don’t worry?!

Alert the Guinness World records man, i haven’t even got to the holiday destination yet and already I wanted to go back home.

Finally we reached the house and unloaded the cars. Like most typical WOGS we had packed like we were staying for a month instead of a four days and like most typical girls

I packed shoes and clothes I didn’t even end up wearing.

Ignoring mum’s instructions of “Where do you think you’re going, unpack your stuff Danielle!”, I bolted through the unfamiliar house to the television set, my heart sinking, there was no Foxtel, I’d forgotten to tell dad to buy a newspaper when we had stopped for petrol and there was no wifi internet. Great.

When game-day came on our drive to a Winery I was on TAB/Pub/RSL/Fox Footy signage watch. While everyone else was taking in the scenery I was desperately recording any sign of somewhere to watch the Collingwood game.

“DADLOOKTHEREFOXFOOTYLOOK!”

Never had a banner on an RSL/TAB building looked so beautiful.

Yours truly began to sheppard everyone out of the winery to the carpark, we still had

to tour the strawberry farm and make a stop home to rest for a bit before game time and i

didn’t want to be late.

“Come on people, let’s go, Carpark is THIS WAY!”

After dad had spoiled me with yet MORE purchases we headed back to the house for an hour to rest. I who hadn’t slept at all (you know how it is when its not your own bed)

was glad to lay down but cautious not to fall asleep. After a good rest we headed to the RSL which surprisingly was the next best thing to being at the actual game.

Beers and chips were flowing (mind you I never want to see hot chips or fried seafood for another year now having overdosed on ‘beach food’ all Easter holidays) and the 95% of the room were cheering for Collingwood.

Because of my public commentary I could feel myself getting looks from the oldies and blokes sitting around us. Not bad looks…more like ‘how does she know that?’ and ‘gee that chick knows her stuff’ looks.

North had me worried at the start, they seemed to be stealing the clearances cleaner than we could, which was weird because; well come on people, SWAN, PENDLEBURY enough said. But Swallow was great for them and they managed to hold on, with a bit of help

from the umpires I might add. Then the Lynch to Cloke combo was unleashed and I was in awe. From there we applied the pressure and took the game back with Blairy bulldozing after the footy into the packs and the baby Magpies showing off their speed

with some great chase down tackles. I was impressed and with that my mind traveled to next week, aka world war III.

If we don’t win nextweek, I may have to pack my bags and be on the road again away from Melbourne sooner than I think -.-
