Following Ashton Agar’s success with the bat, you have probably heard or read some interviews conducted by a range of media outlets with Todd Ferguson, the Aussie landscape gardener thrust into the spotlight overnight because of his role as the head coach of the Henley Cricket Club, where Agar recently played some cricket.
What has gone unrecognised in those interviews is Todd’s status as an undisputed legend of South Australian sport. His numerous achievements include: kicking a hundred goals in a season with the Adelaide University Blacks, including ten in the grand final at Adelaide Oval to bring up the ton; going on to play SANFL footy with Sturt for a number of seasons; achieving the rare double of simultaneously playing SACA Grade cricket, also for Sturt, becoming Sturt’s record games holder (I believe); revolutionising wicket keeping worldwide (notwithstanding his 6″2 full forward’s physique), by shedding the wicket keeping pads and standing up to the medium pacers with nothing but shin pads, his cricket whites, an athletic protector and balls of steel; remembered fondly as the ringleader of the bar staff of the General Havelock Hotel in the halcyon days of the Adelaide Grand Prix, notorious for his cartoon character boxer shorts (often on view), his passion for 70s and 80s music (a passion unabated) and his extravagant dance moves.
‘Bubba’, as he is known, is renowned throughout the Adelaide footy and cricket community, and revered at Sturt as the ‘Godfather’ of Hawthorn Oval. Forget Hashton Hagar the Not-so-Horrible, Bubba Ferguson is the next big story for the Footy Almanac.
