When we last conferred, Geordie C held a slim two point lead over Pete Ca, with Scott H in third place. Matt W held sway in fourth place, while fighting it out for the scraps of the $80 prize for fifth place were Theo Harms, The Holy Boot, Paul L and Leslie H. Lou F led the fight for “money back” glory in last place.
And so to the last Home and Away round and the finals.
Round 23
After a final round that could have seen Brisbane, North Melbourne and even Adelaide climb into the top 8, it ultimately did not change but a shuffle of teams amongst the also-rans saw Pete Ca claim top spot on 32, two clear of Geordie C. Equal third were Scott H, Theo Harms and the Holy Boot on 40. Lou F remained at the rear.
Finals Week 1
Upsets abounded after Hawthorn accounted for Sydney on the Friday night as expected. Freo amazingly beat Geelong down at Kardinia Park (you can never just say “at Kardinia Park”; it must always be “down at Kardinia Park”), Carlton unexpectedly ended the Tiger dream and Port Adelaide had an upset win on the night that Kevin Rudd didn’t.
This changed several positions in the top 8, and as a consequence Geordie C regained top spot on the ladder ladder. His 36 point total took him two clear of Pete Ca. Six points further back in third place was a trio: Matthew B, Damian B and The Holy Boot. At the other end of the scale Lucky Last Lou was still Lucky Last Lou.
Finals Weeks 2, 3 and 4
Further upsets in the Semi Finals, Preliminary Finals and the Grand Final could have seen the top five ladderists change places but there were in fact no unexpected results in that period, which means that I can say…
CONGRATULATIONS TO GEORDIE C who, in his first year in the Gigs Ladder Comp takes home the big prize, the highest in GLC history, $720. I can also say…
CONGRATULATIONS TO PETE CA who, ALSO in his first year in the Gigs Ladder Comp, takes home second prize, the highest in GLC history, $400. And I can say…
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE HOLY BOOT AND MATTHEW B who, ALSO in their first year in the Gigs Ladder Comp, take home equal third/fourth/fifth prize, along with DAMIAN B, the only top-fiver not to be in their debut year. The two Bs and the Boot, will get an equal share of $240 + $160 + $80 = $480, which will equate to a cool $160 each. And of course, how could I not say…
CONGRATULATIONS TO LOU F, whose outstanding total of 150, an incredible 114 behind our winner, earns her a well-deserved refund.
In the so-called experts department, former Age scribe and head honcho at Slattery Media, Gentleman Geoff Slattery, proved that his decision not to pay the $10 entry fee was indeed a wise one. Having led this category for much of the year, he slipped behind eventual the winner, future Parisian Robert Walls (48 points, 11th place overall) and Rohan Connolly (50 points, 18th overall). Geoff’s total of 52 saw him finish in a still very respectable 30th place, ahead of Garry Lyon and Andy Maher (60 points, 87th place), Matthew Lloyd and the Swinburne Computer (62 points, 96th place) and Scott Cummings (64 points, 112th place). Yrag Legov, the only jukebox service repairman within a 3,000 mile radius of Yakutsk, finished in 179th place on 138 points.
Another year over…
So there we have it, another great year – the 23rd – of the ladder comp, is done. The full ladder ladder is below and will also be emailed to you very soon. Congratulations to all prizewinners. I’ll be emailing you all to arrange payment over the next days, but first…
Hang on folks!
Have you paid your $10 entry fee? As much as I love giving my own money away, it’s your entry fee that actually pays the prizemoney of our winners. If you haven’t paid, could you please do so over the next few days. I will be emailing my bank details to you shortly. If you’re not sure if you’ve paid, drop me a line and I’ll check my records.
Finally
Thanks to everyone who took part and sent in a ladder. I look forward to hounding you for your 2014 ladder from about late February! In the meantime, enjoy trade period, and the national draft, and the pre-season draft and the 2014 fixture announcement, and the obligatory summer scandals involving players doing silly things, and Cup Day, and Christmas and/or your relevant festive season, and the New Year, and Australia Day (unless you live in Yakutsk like Yrag Legov, or elsewhere), and whatever else that will happen between now and then that I have not yet thought of.

About Andrew Gigacz
Well, here we are. The Bulldogs have won a flag. What do I do now?

167th? That’s the last time I enter your lousy comp Gigs.
T-Bone, you just need to revisit the strategy you used this year. Nothing wrong with the comp!
At least I can now tell people I equalled Scott Cummings in a footy competition (I’ll remain vague).
Hmm – the Avenging Eagle and I finished 124th. I will send you Woosha’s BSB and account details to deduct the $10, as it was all his fault.
In the interim I will forward the dosh myself, and you can reimburse me when he coughs up.
Thanks for all the record keeping (I know you love it).
Somewhat relieved that I finished above ‘Burkey’s Jive Turkeys’ Gigs. Seriously, its a great comp mate, despite T-Bone/Bania’s protestations.
Phil. You know it’s been jarring me all this time: the name has to go with pic!!! I’m T-Bone no more …
(PS: I had your book sent to my folks and will pick it up this Sunday. They say it look beautiful.)
Thanks Kenny, I hope you enjoy the read. Look forward to your feedback. As for Gigs’ tipping comp, I think that next year we should do a Costanza and tip the exact opposites of what our instincts tell us. We could kill, Kenny. Kill!!
Thanks for running the comp again this season, Gigs. I’m going to slave away all off-season now, to earn enough to pay next season’s rego ;) Next year I promise not to put the Horrid Hawks last on my ladder.
=161st? At least nobody can say you cheated! :D
